Not really. His position is more of a contrarian. If most of Council likes something, he votes against it, good or bad. He just likes his name in the news.
That’s because most of council is interested in throwing more money at every half baked idea thrown in front of them with no regard to fiscal prudence.

So what are the qualifications for running for city council again? I heard that the benefits are so good that you can commit fraud and still be eligible for full pension.

The shitty thing is that you have to step down from your council seat to run for mayor. If he loses, then no more Farkas to keep things interesting/provide entertainment

Nothing. Just keep inviting your voters to coffee and BBQs like greasy Joe.

I can totally do that. I can expense the coffee, bbqs, and the occasional shooter, right?

Just got to make sure you put some random names from the phone book on the expense reports

That's a challenge because I would need to find an old person who hoards the white pages.

While I can't argue with that, it isn't that he is against dumb spending, it's how he does it. He's belligerent about it, in a way that he knows will get him press.

You didn't see Ric McIver getting kicked out of the room.

Nenshi is a vindictive asshole who has proven himself multiple times. See Cal Wenzel defamation lawsuit.

Calgary taxpayers are paying nearly $64,000 for an investigation ordered by city council that found Coun. Joe Magliocca improperly claimed $5,657 in expenses and raised questions about another $10,247.

I want to see who in council thought this was a wise expenditure

Just watched his announcement video. Had no idea he turned down his pension when he joined council.

Is that supposed to be some sort of noble act that we should respect him for? Who turns down free money from their employer that they are entitled to? Is he truly "principled" or was this part of the act from the beginning as he knew he wanted to run for mayor?

Guy does something in the interests of taxpayers and the Liberals come out of the woodwork to assume he’s only doing it for nefarious reasons.

    Sounds about right.

He sounds terrible. We should therefore vote for Nenshi again. Ug.

I don’t think I ever said Nenshi should be mayor again. FWIW I liked him during his first term but he is way past his expiry date. I’d honestly be surprised if he ran again.

It’s laughable that Conservatives think turning down a measly pension is doing something for the taxpayers. It’s not even a drop in the bucket. Never leave money on the table especially when it’s part of your employment benefits. But if he truly did it for the good of Calgary’s balance sheet, why bring it up as one of the first things on your campaign video. Reminds me of people who post their donation receipts to social media.

They get at least two pensions. The pensions are DB and extremely generous, so the liability of his pension is actually massive - well into the millions.

It makes your Shell pension look like chump change.

Yeah, I always got this impression too. Sometimes it's hilarious, sometimes it's annoying.

"Uh, how are the rest of you voting?"

If you make a 120k+ salary (today's dollars) at the same employer over your entire career then damn right your pension should be worth a million+. I still stand by my statement that it's dumb to turn down your retirement benefits that you are entitled to. It certainly makes you look good when you're campaigning though.

If he's truly an altruistic selfless Mother Teresa that only cares about the city then i hope he wins and makes a difference. I just don't buy it right now is all.

Turning down a pension is an act of solidarity in the face of the changes you're proposing, as opposed to the general "do as I say, not as I do" method of politicians.

He may be a bit of a weasel, but I think he means well.

Ol boys club style mentality that Joe gets just a slap on the wrist, when really he should be paying for all those audit costs to teach that fat ugly fuck a lesson.
