How would you make the console, knobs and finishings not look and feel cheap. What would be your recommendations to improve these items and what is your assumption regarding how these items in the Jeep are made.
It's funny, years ago I touched up on how cheap entry level German cars actually are, but it's deceiving because it looks sorta expensive.

I think that's what people are getting at? The germans seemed to have figured out how to make cheap ass plastic interior look close to their most expensive counterparts. A lot have to do with the textures and shapes of the plastics, the edges, how they flow around other pieces to give off the perception of expensive nice interior while costing next to nothing. The standard is sorta set there, Japanese has mostly caught on, domestics are still a ways behind.

I suspect that 9 times out of 10, if the brand is domestic, the same regurgitated comments that have been used for years are simply repeated without any experience with the specific vehicle being discussed. As mentioned, the Jeep interior isn't an AMG and I'm not tying to convince anyone otherwise. The porno red interior is going to appeal to very few people and I hated it for the first 3 months of ownership. With that being said, the Jeeps interior isn't simply a bunch of cheap plastic which is always the assumption. The console , door panels, dash and every part that is red are all leather. The 5 knobs on the dash and console have chrome metal trim rings and textured rubber around the circumference, the trim is metal and carbon fibre. The infotainment and Apple Car Play are actually decent.

This is why I ask, what should be done to improve these individual components that were specified as "cheap". If it was a clapped together, primarily plastic interior like my CTS-V wagon, I'd understand the comments.

I'm just coming from an aesthetics and design perspective, so please don't take offence. I haven't been in a current gen JGC, so I'm just looking at it from your photos. The first thing is that chrome should be used as trim, and as trim, should be consistent in width. All 3 chrome trims around the shifter, cupholders, switchgear has various chrome widths around them. Modern design minimized the use of chrome, and when used, is much more subtle and isn't the primary focus when looking at whatever it's accenting.

Symmetry. There is no symmetry to the design, from the button layout, to the layout of the 3 components to the console. It's like the designers just decided to plop things down wherever they wanted and aligned it as best as possible. In fact, I think this is actually from the same original design in the recalled shifter where it was even Moore awkwardly spaced. I mean it doesn't have to be perfectly symmetric, but it needs to flow well enough to work. Audi A4's console isn't symmetric at all, but it flows aesthetically because it's all evenly spaced. Corvette C8 is pretty damn good too without symmetry, probably one of the best interiors GM has designed IMO and like the A4 can break the symmetry by focusing on the driver. What's hilarious is that I'll bet your cupholders work 100x better than the Audi A4 one where the shifter is in the way of your drinks.

BTW - huge fan of CarPlay on domestics. It's 100x better than what I have in my "luxury German car" WITHOUT A FUCKING TOUCHSCREEN haha. Even the Pacifica I rented a while back was better to use than my car.

Anyways, my thoughts as someone with zero design experience trying to interpret design language.

All totally fair. If someone said, I don’t like your interior, red is shit, the symmetry sucks and the layout is idiotic. No problem at all, and no offence taken. But saying that the interior is cheap, would be like saying a Trackhawk is slow.

It’s the same as Killramos stating that the console reminds him it’s a Chrysler. This doesn’t resonate with me as I can’t think of any Chrysler that has a leather wrapped console like the Jeep, but truthfully, I don’t follow Chrysler’s product line well enough to know for sure. From my past experience with shitty old Turbo Dodges, I definitely am not reminded of leather or carbon fibre ever.

I just googled two top shelf interiors off the top of my head. GV80 and LC500

I like your red interior. Nothing wrong with a pussy wagon haha. Too bad you don’t have a yellow exterior to match.

That color is polarizing, but the interior is really really nice. Ergonomics, materials, everything. It all looks and feels expensive. That picture doesn’t really do it justice.

What's a "regular" grand Cherokee? Like 60k? With maybe 300hp? So extra 450hp for extra 40k? Seems like as reasonable a performance bargain as anything no matter what the interior.

But don't mind me, I'm the poor guy who can't even afford leather seats in my pickup.

I’d still want a Trackhawk if the interior was much worse or even the same as the base Jeep. The red leather interior was a $7000 option that mine happened to have when I bought it. (Used, I don’t live in Aspen.)

I agree with you, I went to look at the 2020 GLE and the leather was synthetic. That is a $80k SUV, feels like you sat in a Uber with seat covers. To get the real leather then you have to pay another $10K irc. I agree the digital dash and the ambient lighting makes it look nicer but not what I would expect. The seats look very comfortable in the trackhawk. For the price point I think it is the engine and the exterior styling you get.

Nothing wrong with that colour. It's really trendy right now for contemporary kitchens.
