Yes and no. I think there is a large chunk of cases which can be attributed to specific gatherings where people were less than careful. For the remainder, you're probably right - but it's all our responsibility to assess the risk and whether the juice is worth the squeeze in anything we do in public. At this point, numbers are still reasonably low, so exposure risk is in turn *relatively* low. Add to that taking care with masks and letting the candy sit, and I think that further reduces the risk to levels that are at least acceptable to my wife and I. It certainly was a decision which required discussion and risk assessment, and we were close to going the other direction. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
On the flip side, we haven't seen my family in Kamloops all year. I have elderly parents, and the risk just hasn't been worth it. My mother is basically insisting we come down for Christmas, but I'm none too confident we will be spending any time down there any time soon. Maybe next summer, Pops.
Honest question for all the people who are going to “quarantine” their candy, do you do this with your groceries as well?
See Crank. See Crank Walk. Walk Crank Walk.
1-2 grocery workers stocking the shelves and maybe the odd person that grabbed and item and put it back beforehand versus 100 houses worth of candy. Not really the same comparison. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It’s not?! I thought that was the argument for this whole debate??This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I just assumed by "quarantine", everyone in the thread really means they'll be eating it all themselves, but blaming covid. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

For the first month of the virus, we did. Either left it for a couple of days, or washed the outside of non-porous packaging or put packaged goods in new containers. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
That was a lot of work.
Again, it's about risk assessment. As Pheoxs said, there is likely limited potential contact when talking about items in the grocery store, but Halloween candy has at least one touch point for every house you visit. So now, we don't bother with groceries anymore, but we do wash produce really well as it has had more people standing over it.

I mentioned putting snickers through a hole in my fence for the kids, and holy shit you'd think i was on a watch list or something... had officers knock on my door asking me a bunch of questions.. one busted out a measuring tape to make sure the hole wasnt at crotch level. Like, i just dont wanna get sick!
Glad we changed our mind. All kids, very respectful of distance.
No teenagers whatsoever, they're all too busy partying it up to raise the daily count next week.
More kids than last year.
Didn't even get a dozen and I know for a fact there's more than that on my street alone.
Most of the kids were in the 3-6 year old range, only two that were older than that I think.
Had about 60 kids this year, about 1.5x as many as last year. Good mix of younger and older kids.
Rigged up a chute with a ladder and bristol board... worked great, only 1 kid had no idea what to do.

6 kids. Last year we had 20 so definitely way lighter this year. Wife took our kid around my in-laws in Thorncliffe and apparently it was quite busy around there.
We were up about 50% from last year. The good weather probably helped although I don't remember the weather being an issue over the past few years. Fewer houses participated but the ones that did went bigger. I saw more effort put in to the open houses than I've ever seen before. We had a three house driveway block party with music, decorations and wandering ghouls.
