It has been a mandate from the Alberta Government for years. It is well documented in the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan that the Safe Vehicles initiative is something the AB government wants police agencies to enforce.

Under section 66 of the TSA a peace officer can perform a vehicle inspection. They can also direct the vehicle to be taken somewhere for an inspection. If a vehicle is deemed unsafe a peace officer can seize the registration and licence plate and can make an application to the AB government to have the vehicle branded with an "unsafe" status where it can no longer be registered or be on the road until it passes a salvage inspection (or the inspecting officer can request the status be lifted once repairs are proven to be made).

Ya.... but let's not kid ourselves. This latest enforcement is more about driving revenue than getting beat the sh&t cars off the road.

Be nice if people had working brake lights. That would be nice.

And why not generate revenue from people driving shitboxes? It'll be snowing soon, and you can bet the majority of rear-end collisions will be involving vehicles with bald tires. Ticket them now and force them to get their shit fixed. Touchy feely warnings don't change behaviour. Force the fix before it begins to affect other people.
The question is, why was this not being done at this same level 2 years ago? Why now, with people already stressed out.

It definitely reeks of opportunism. Never let a crisis go to waste.

But...that isn't who they are really targeting. They are going after the low fruit like tint and exhaust....etc. This isn't about safety.

I've always said I would like to see 2 things:

    1) Mandatory driving tests for people over a certain age OR everyone at certain intervals (i.e. every 5 years).

    and

    2) Vehicle safety checks to deal with all the beaters driving around on bald tires burning gallons of oil, and also mandatory winter tires.

I've just accepted that neither will ever happen, at least in Calgary.

2 has been tried in other Canadian jurisdictions, and doesn’t work.

Mechanics are crooks who will sign anything for $50.

1 is expensive. It’s like 300 bucks to go do a drivers test and reclass your license these days, and the testing centres are massively backed up as is.

Dealer made me sign a statement that I didn't want mudflaps on my new F150 and if I got a ticket I wouldn't have a leg to stand on with them.

Is this the narrative in your mind or do you have proof that tint and exhaust are the real targets as opposed to safety items such as bald tires in advance of winter?
....as much proof as you have that they are after real safety infractions.

Along with other duties, I'm currently in a traffic unit, and am a collision investigator. I can assure you I have never been in any unit meeting where tint enforcement has been talked about or encouraged. It's the most whined about ticket even though the people getting them know full well it's illegal. (Basically like how you are whining about it). I receive and review every traffic tip/complaint submitted online through my police agency and the exhaust related stuff that gets investigated are targeted (specific vehicles routinely ripping through residential areas, semis using jake brakes in certain parts of the city etc). I have written 3 tickets for tint in my life time. 1 ticket was for a guy drinking a beer while driving beside me because he didn't think I could see. The other two were issued as breaks in lieu of getting tickets for driving infractions that would have come with demerits.

Out of the several vehicles I have had branded as unsafe and had permanently removed from the roads, none of them were for tint or exhaust LOL. The rest of my unit operates the same.
The EPS and CPS (add RCMP out of Ponoka) traffic guys are 10x time more ruthless than you are - they will even ticket other members without consideration at all. Its all black and white to them.

Following too closely and the ensuing rear end collision is the major problem according to the data.

There was a recent article out of Edmonton showing this:

The data found that the number one cause for severe crashes causing major injury or death in Edmonton is drivers following too closely.

The second most common cause is motorists driving off the road, followed by drivers not yielding to people who have the right of way.

These findings echo the data presented by the Province for 2017. (Most recent I could find)

Following too closely (31.7%), running off the road (18.0%) and making a left turn across the path of an
oncoming vehicle (11.4%) were the most frequently identified improper driver actions contributing to
    casualty collisions

So these inspections by CPS is just their way of going after low hanging fruit. I wouldn't mind seeing a few shit boxes taken off the road myself. There is a lot of junk out there, but yah, this is just low hanging fruit.
