I think you contradicted yourself. Following too closely is the number 1 cause (rear end collisions). Inspections finding bald tires and brake issues that could reduce rear end collisions is going after low hanging fruit?
Lane Splitting would be the true low hanging fruit, no?

You can NOT, and I cannot stress this enough, listen to the Police opinion on what traffic taxes are enforcing SAFETY. They are full of shit, it is not evidence based and it is profit driven. You can't fault the traffic rank and file for believing the tripe they're fed by their organization but that doesn't make it true.

I do not support fine generating aspects of traffic enforcement and never will. But don't worry po-po pals, I know how to differentiate that from the more valued work.

That's the same excuse they gave the public for red-light cameras too. By your logic, since intersections with red-light cameras have seen an increase in rear-end collisions, should we not be getting rid of them?

Don't get me wrong man, I back the blue on most anything, but even my first thoughts on this are the same as 16 here. This screams revenue generation, and if it isn't, the optics and timing of it is REALLY bad.

What would REALLY help with safety (as well as revenue) is a blitz of unmarked traffic guys (and gals) driving around (10x more than present) with traffic, esp in rush hour - and giving out warnings and tickets to:

    a) motorists who are obviously tail gating
    b) motorists driving with DRL on only (no tail lights) in the dark
    c) motorists who fail to yield/merge properly (going 40kph on deerfoot, no signal, etc.) - or those who stop in a free flow lane.
    d) motorists on their fucking phones

I dont think these even require a vehicle stop - just mail the offender a copy of the video or photo. Could catch a lot more and certainly help educate users more.

The most important thing is OPTICS here - ie. the LEOs not taking advangate of a crisis but instead enforcing the laws that are commonly broken and have the appearance of not being enforced much (although I heard of members now who write more distracted driving tix than speeding)

No way RO tickets would be good enough. These morons need points on their licenses.

You know what would be cheap and get things cleaned up in a week? A bounty system for equipment infractions.

Call in your neighbour’s lifted dodge that follows no rules, get 20 bucks on conviction. Hahahahah

I hate stupid laws. But if it a law then enforce it. If people don’t like laws being enforced, get them changed.

This whole laundry list of stupid equipment laws that are only applied when a cop feels like being a dick is the worst of all outcomes.

Following too closely is leading to rear ended collisions. Are we trying to say that rear end collisions aren’t happening when following too closely? All I’m posting here is the data showing that window tint isn’t killing or injuring people. So the police doing inspections and going after something like window tint isn’t addressing the real problems. What’s a solution? I don’t know.

The question is, why was this not being done at this same level 2 years ago? Why now, with people already stressed out.

It definitely reeks of opportunism. Never let a crisis go to waste.
Remember when Masked Bandit said insurance companies aren't asking for inspections because of covid.

And now here we are with CPS and these checkstops....

    Coincidence?

I found its usually a result of the motorist acting like a dick, that they end up with BS tickets.

A better Justice system is impartial to dicks on either side of the equation

Please don't try to equate traffic fine revenue with the justice system.

The insurance inspections were for 15+ years older vehicles - and they always passed those 'inspections' with ease anyway.

You only need mudflaps if the top 1/2 of the tire isn’t covered by the fender.
Every day I like to play a game I call, "Count the Jeeps that have mudflaps."
After a few years I think I'm up to 2 total. Are the Jeep dealerships allergic to them or something?

And why not generate revenue from people driving shitboxes? It'll be snowing soon, and you can bet the majority of rear-end collisions will be involving vehicles with bald tires. Ticket them now and force them to get their shit fixed. Touchy feely warnings don't change behaviour. Force the fix before it begins to affect other people.
Majority of those accidents is still and will likely always be from retards that can't get off Facebook long enough to finish their commute. Massive distracted driving blitz's would be far more effective at accident and injury reduction than BS equipment violations.

Along with other duties, I'm currently in a traffic unit, and am a collision investigator. I can assure you I have never been in any unit meeting where tint enforcement has been talked about or encouraged. It's the most whined about ticket even though the people getting them know full well it's illegal. (Basically like how you are whining about it). I receive and review every traffic tip/complaint submitted online through my police agency and the exhaust related stuff that gets investigated are targeted (specific vehicles routinely ripping through residential areas, semis using jake brakes in certain parts of the city etc). I have written 3 tickets for tint in my life time. 1 ticket was for a guy drinking a beer while driving beside me because he didn't think I could see. The other two were issued as breaks in lieu of getting tickets for driving infractions that would have come with demerits.

Out of the several vehicles I have had branded as unsafe and had permanently removed from the roads, none of them were for tint or exhaust LOL. The rest of my unit operates the same.
Even if you're telling the truth, it's hard to believe you could be so naive as to think you're the rule and not the exception. I doubt it is hard for you to look up ticket issuing numbers? Every time they do a weekend ticket blitz they print these numbers in the paper, the massive majority of tickets are revenue related not safety related. It would also be hard to believe there has suddenly been a huge moral change in regards to traffic enforcement, and that they all of sudden want to make an effort to increase road safety.
