Both S65 and S85 have the same two main failures. Rod bearings and throttle actuators. I would never touch a SMG car for either however.

I mean it has BMW tax, M Tax, and V10 tax to do anything engine related. Low probability, high cost. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It’s basically like buying an old Bentley.

I dont understand the hate, sure the grill is out of this world. But people thought the same thing with Audi and Lexus when they first came out. Other than that... I dont as much down side as people have mentioned.
I owned an S85, yes the SMG is shitty but the engine was reliable. Personal experience.
The new 3/4 grill is hideous. This is near a near universal reaction.

I thought those V10s were a "when not if" kind of engine. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
BMW isn't a very good engine builder, IMO, and I've owned some.
I’ve test driven all 3 of the super saloons, and the M5 was by far the best of the 3.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The RS6 was just a complete failure.
The E63S was fun, but the ride was way too harsh and the motor lacked the deep growl of what I consider muscle.
Hence why I ended up going with the Bimmer.
Do a little digging if you have time. I considered a manual V10 M5 for a brief period, but decided not to once I found out that they basically decided to sell a manual option as an afterthought. The car was engineered around the SMG so the manual versions, in some cases, are a little neutered (easy example - you can't fully defeat the stability/traction control in the manual, but you can in the SMG).This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Back on topic, I'd consider owning an E9x M3 if it wasn't for the rod bearings worrying me, and am still somewhat interested in an F80 M3. Nothing newer though.

Not really any different than a M96 Porsche engine. It could go forever or it could fail catastrophically, but if you do some preventative repair it’s unlikely it will fail. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
E92 prices are getting pretty good. Maybe get a shop to quote you to replace the bearings and factor into cost if it bothers you?

I’m just looking for a Sunday kind of car so I’m ok with the “inferior” but simpler manual models. They are definitely still pulling higher prices than SMGs too. I’m kind of between a E60/E63, E90/92 or a 996/997 as a nice weekend cruiser in a couple of years. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I don’t think I have ever heard someone say they prefer the sound of the BMW V8 compared to the AMG.
My C63 sounded way better then the M5 when I drove them back to back.
I think every BMW down to the 116 has audio piped in.

It's a preference thing, but I definitely prefer the Merc. M5 is great too. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I personally don’t really like the E63, and would have the M5 over it any day.
But sound is not a category it wins.

I've never been a sedan guy - wagon or go fuck your mother. So the correct answer is Panamera Sport Turismo.
Ahh yes. The one that wins no category.

Between my two E9Xs I put close to 100k kilometres on the stock bearings. I kept up on oil changes, didn’t thrash on it until engine was warm and took it to redline frequently. Only reason why I didn’t buy another one, despite the low prices, was the horrid gear ratios. Highway speeds you were above 3000rpm and it drove me nuts, this was with a 6MT and DCT. If I lived in BC with twisty roads this wouldn’t bother me as much, but here in the prairies the longer gears of the TR6060 suits me better.
Yeah I was going to say that's a highly opinionated statement as the M5 is a very good car and if you are most interested in performance over style I have a hard time believing the E63 or RS6 are better choices. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
