It would prove that his sailboat isn't any fancier than the common man's.

That mask is well done. It's a real shame since showing appreciation and respect for a certain group all of a sudden cultural appropriation. Someone should tell the Natives in BC they don't own the Orca's in the ocean. I hope the Canucks don't change their logo either.

Jesus, you guys. what possible harm would it do to update the logo with input from actual native artists? I think there are some in the Vancouver area that probably would love to work on a project like this. It's not like that logo was handed down on stone tablets from god herself. It's not like 1998 or whenever that logo was designed is some shining moment in Canadian cultural history that needs to be preserved.

I get pissed off about so many things, but I honestly cannot understand the issue with trying to move forward with things like this

Why can't a white guy design a logo in a way that is respectful and good enough to be a face of a professional sports team? Why does it have to be commissioned by a Native to not offend anyone? Is that style of drawing exclusive to Native designers? In the fair, equal society that we are why does the fact it was not drawn by a Native really matter?

Perhaps the tribute to the Native culture should be appreciated as just that, a tribute. People should move on without trying to besmirch the organization. It's not like the Canuks bought an Orca and kept it in a tank for people to cheer at as they walk in to the stadium.

Are the Flames disrespecting Fire Fighters?

I'm not an expert on any of this stuff. I'm just thinking that if you own a professional sports team in a place with a sizeable native population, and your logo includes native imagery, it's probably a smart business decision to include them in the process.

As a white man, that wouldn't offend me.

The Canucks always have Chinese New Years jerseys as well. I guess I should start being offended...

Too bad I actually think they're pretty sweet.

Don't cater to cancel culture. That's all this really is.
It's not an ethnicity issue, but they try to make it that so that Whitey shrouds themselves in vicarious guilt and sits down quietly so as to not get called out further.

The fact is that someone is telling me I'm not allowed to draw a picture because of the colour of my skin.
That is not acceptable. It's preposterous and ironic that under the guise of ethnic equality someone can vomit this hate-filled nonsense and other people eat it up and spread more hate.

WOOOT WOOT! BREAKING NEWS ON beyond.ca here.....white man poster FINALLY understands what it's really like to be a marginalized person in Canada ROFL.

Btw, Canucks put out a statement yesterday, they passed along a statement from the Indigenous groups that make up the Haida, they don't have a problem with this logo. I honestly think the white prof from Manitoba owes the Canucks organization an apology.

On a side note, Canucks are my number 2 team, and I've always hated this logo, it's ugly. Not so much the Haida design, it's more the colours and the way the incorporate it into the jerseys, in the current version, they even added Vancouver on top of it, looks ridiculous. Now if they blow up the Haida design and stick it on the green jerseys and make it more plain, it would look awesome! I've always loved the green jerseys with the stick logo.

This stuff all makes more sense when you realize the word consultation is synonymous with compensation.

This is Canada, you aren’t allowed to do anything without bribing the local tribal warlords.

What did you think this was? A free and democratic society or something?

I see both sides. To my white ass, I think that cultural appropriation is generally poorly done and if done in a manner which is purposely disrespectful, there is a real problem. But both the Canucks logo and Holtby's mask were intended as a celebration of culture. Should the creator have contacted native people to ensure authenticity? Probably. But should we make a big deal out of it? Given the context, I'd say no.

People these days are so quick to get offended and call something racist when there is zero such intent. Canadian culture especially is a mixture of many, and telling people they "aren't allowed" to do harmless things because maybe someone might be offended is a little too far down the PR road for me.
