A couple of problems with trading Gio this past trade deadline.
    1) He still has one more year with a 6.75 cap hit. Not a lot of contending teams would be able to absorb that hit for next year
    2) Hindsight is 20/20, but trading the captain at the deadline would've signalled they were giving up on a playoff run, however slim it was

Looking at the expansion roster. Gio is one of the top players they've drafted. That's bad asset management. Since you can see it from a mile away and plan for it. I hate to say it, but look at what Toronto was able to do and basically lost someone for nothing. Or even Edmonton...
Edmonton lost a good defencemen when defence is their weakest area. Plus, he's the guy they traded Taylor Hall for, before Hall won a Hart Trophy... So they kind of gave away Taylor Hall for a guy that they gave away. LoL!

    Larson was an upcoming UFA.

I agree with Mclaren, Tre's gotta get a side deal in there to move Gio (or someone on the protected list) to get an asset and then let Seattle take Kylington or Ryan.

My bet is Tre didn't expect Tanev to be so good so he could have been picked. Or he was thinking paying off Seattle would have been cheaper, rumour was Seattle wanted a 1st and 3rd to stay away from certain players.

Edmonton now has exactly Zero assets recouped for Hall, Eberle and Yakupov.

no not the same. Larson is a UFA. If he doesn't re-sign with Edmonton it wouldn't have mattered. Edmonton actually lost someone who wont sign with them anyways. Rumor is that Edmonton offered the same term/$ and Larson selected to go. So Edmonton actually did well in the expansion draft.

Geez, I've got to apologize at some point for my reckless disregard for UFA positions.
So, I'm still correct in that the Hall trade now shows zero assets. But I'll agree that it was potentially the correct move to leave him unprotected if he was essentially a guaranteed loss.

Apparently no side deals were made... So Seattle chose all these players without any additional compensation.

    That's awful.

$30mil left in cap space though... You'd have to imagine they plan on being very aggressive in free agency?

Side deals to keep players would have been worse then losing them for nothing.

I like the chaos that this year will bring.

    Agreed.
However they selected some very off the board and rather confusing players, without any compensation to do so.

If you reference Kaiser Sozé it means you support Kevin Spacey which means you support homosexual pedophilia and whatever other Bigfoot, space alien, horseshit he's been accused of in spite of all of his tremendous (evil) contributions to acting, film and the Arts.

What a horrible comparison you attempted there...

Hall, Yak and Eberle were #1, #1 and #22 overall pick respectively. They played a combined 17 years between the three of them, which funny enough was the same number that Iggy played for the Flames.

Iggy was the 11th pick and the Flames got him for a guy who was going to leave after that season too, because the Flames didn't want to pony up the money Joe was demanding.

As for Kiprusoff, Calgary traded a 2nd rounder for him and he retired so I'm not sure what you're reaching for in terms of us not getting value for him. When he still had trade value near the end, he told the Flames organization he was ready to retire and move back home (which he did).

Then Giordano was an undrafted signing by the Flames that turned into 15 seasons, a few all stars, a norris trophy and rocking the C for the team.

Gio is also 38 years old, and for the vast majority of players in the NHL, he is retirement age. While a gritty veteran, CGY players don't need that as the current players have already learned what they are going to from him. By the time the next crop of players come up, he would be golfing anyways.

This is him doing what Iggy tried to do, and go somewhere they might actually have a chance to win the cup and for that to happen, he can't be on the Flames, because we all know, the cup isn't coming here any time soon.

Oh okay, that makes it better. Look at how awesome this team is!

You seemed to have totally forgotten that the Flames did get assets back for Iginla, which amounted to nothing.

The key is to be ruthless. Stop hanging onto players because you want to be seen as nice. Nice will get you murdered in the NHL. Trade assets when they have value. Have a pipeline of at least replacement level players. Stop trading away draft picks. Tre literally does not understand randomness.

How about Brodie leaving for nothing? Was that okay too? Is it okay because other teams do it?

Don’t get me wrong. Half the team should go in my eyes.
