I straight up did mine with a couple coats of Kilz heavy hiding primer. It covers absolutely everything (its intended to cover stains), is seals the drywall, and its white. Makes a huge difference on the brightness in the garage. Mine was also mudded and taped and I did nothing to touch that up and its not noticable. Its a working garage, not a showroom

We primed before paint... which you 100% have to do if you paint. But primer doesn't hide a mudding job that haven't been sanded.

Depending if you're interested, I can sell you the extra plastic panels I have left. They're ~7'x4', and easy to cut. I did 2 layers, and stapled them to my garage walls. Easier then painting, and they insulate a bit too.

This would be great for someone with OSB walls or something other than drywall. It's not what I'm looking for, but someone else should consider this.

    100%

I've seen jobs where you could peel the paint right off the wall because they didn't prime.

On beyond its hard to tell if serious.. but yes primer covers better and gives the paint a better surface to stick too.

They also have a 2 in 1 primer/paint product too but I dont hear very good things about it. We put on a coat of primer before paint as well.

Primer is cheaper then paint and fresh drywall sucks up a ton of paint. This is reason 1 why you prime before paint.
Primer allows paint to stick better. This is reason 2 why you prime before paint.
Primer gives you a consistent surface (mud vs drywall paper) when you go to paint. This is reason 3 why you prime before paint.

Primer and/or paint does not cover shitty mudding/sanding. This is why you sand before priming and if you're super anal you also do a light sand and mud patching after priming.

If you want to hide a shitty mudding job use as low sheen (ie: ultra matte) paint as possible. Semi-Gloss paint shows all imperfections but it is more durable to clean.

All depends on what level of finish you want, how much durability you want and how good/shitty you want it to look. Yes its a garage but if you're going to spend 15 hours total, whats another 4 or 5 to do it properly?

Also primer shouldn't be left unpainted. The google says it can breakdown over time if you dont cover it with paint.

If you're doing it properly its 3 coats of mud, sand, wipe down, prime then 2 coats of paint.

Worst case Ontario you can always prime it again, still cheaper than paint if you like the finish.

No, I sort of figured it was intentional, but had doubt since I'd never noticed you say that before. It's pretty clever*

*Maybe that's why I doubted you did it intentionally?

Paint does not adhere to wood or drywall properly. I found this out the hard way.

The problem with a shitty finished garage, when you sell, I look at that terrible job and think what else did this MF amature hour hack up inside the house and is hiding behind sheet rock??
Yup, even if it's just a garage I agree with this sentiment. Unfortunately most DIY work really shows even when the guy is "really good at it". Before I decided to just build my own I walked out of every "used" house I looked at on the first sign of DIY flooring/tile/drywall jobs etc., and they're so easy to spot if you have any exposure to proper work. Way to save a couple g buddy, GLWS.
