In this case he will still be able to see the studs since the screws are only 1 coat.

It’s not particularly cheap and a lot of work. It was on my “next year” list for 5 years at my old place.

My current garage is probably not practically finishable. Maybe plywood but that’s it’s.

My garage is in the same shape as yours.
Haven't gone around to it the last 5 years but I plan to just level the surface it and then re-mud certain areas then re-sand.
Primer then paint.

Been meaning to paint my walls so that the drywall doesn't get water damage when I'm washing my cars in the garage.

You need FRP on the walls, not paint.

I painted my garage last year for this very reason. To make it brighter.
Garage came mudded and taped and I didn't do any other prep work.
Just a layer of white primer and a second layer of of white eggshell finish (Because I picked up both for cheap on Kijiji choosing a specific color wasn't an option).

Although I wish I left it as primer because the white was brighter the eggshell finish does make it easer to wipe off any dirt spray from cleaning the garage floor. Also as someone mentioned it hides marks better.

We decided to do another 2 coats of mud and sand our garage before paint (because I wanted it to look more finished). Also wanted to do the ceiling white (in ultra-matte finish) to hide the shitty mudding/sanding we did on the garage ceiling which was also a ton more work to cut in that high up. Was a ton of work (12' ceiling suck huge ass!) but glad we did it, looks bad ass now.

Walls look great 9/10, ceiling looks meh 7/10. I will never mud/sand again LOL



Just waiting for non-recession times to epoxy the floors/foundation walls and to get some NewAge cabinets.

We've also since painted the stair, door and door trim. Also have outdoor carpet to put down the stair treads.

Going through this now. 1 more wall to paint.
Our house must have been a show home back in the day. Stipple vaulted ceiling with 2 sky lights, drywall all around and a strange glass block window.

Painted 3 coats of white semi gloss. Didn't bother sanding or filling the existing holes/marks.


Nice and bright now. Debating on painting the floor next. Just cant justify $2K for someone to do it. Might try and knock it off on a weekend in the spring.

Would it be worth renting one of those orbital vacuum sanders for walls and giving it an 80-20 just to smooth it out?

Renting the tool will make it as easy as humanly possible is my thought process.

I just did a room with a pole sander with the vac attachment and it was pretty annoying but could have been worse.

^This is something I think I could tolerate...


I've got some pretty scabby areas in multiple locations, so I think a vacuum sand might be tolerable and worth the improved results. See pics.




To be honest, I hadn't even really thought of primer, but I guess a quick drying one is a step that's not wasted, at all.

The problem with a shitty finished garage, when you sell, I look at that terrible job and think what else did this MF amature hour hack up inside the house and is hiding behind sheet rock??
