Leadership crossroads is the wrong phrase. Leadership vacuum is more accurate. Chucky got his feelings hurt and stepped back, which is not what leaders do. Gio is ancient and (hopefully) getting taken by the Kraken.

Is it too much to ask for a top-5 centre who is also an elite leader?
You need draft picks to do this and the Flames like to give theirs up.

Draft picks and a full true real rebuild. That's how you do it. Wonder if you could trade Markstrom for a 1st? Chucky for a 1st? Johnny for a 1st? Monny for a bag of pucks? do all four of those, don't protect Gio from the kraken. Play with league minimum goalies for the next couple years, always on 1 year contracts, and plan to get a free agent goalie in 3 years. Save cap space and picks like your life depends on it. Finally be good in second season in new building, win cup in third year in new building.

    Sounds so simple.

I bet you dollars to donuts Tre will trade their 1st for a player.

Now that the season is pretty much over, it's time to start playing the kids in favor of UFAs that are likely not coming back. For the love of god, please play Kylington over Nesterov.
Also would be a good idea to sit some core players who are "playing injured" or "DGAF" so we get to see what these kids have and allowing them to make mistakes so the losses can pile up.

Chucky is not a leader and should never wear the C. You guys are crazy to think he was meant for that role.

Big question now is who we choose to protect.

The more players you trade away before the draft, getting picks back, the less you have to protect.

We tried to do that with Ryan O'Reilly's offer sheet haha

I don't know how much more proof/time needs to be thrown in upper managements face that this group is never going to go all the way.

Season was a write off with deciding to go with Ward from the get go and the team playing like shit for a good chunk of it, if anything playing somewhat decent towards the end of the season might bring some trade value up on some players for the off season.

I just don't see there being any switch that's flipped and we're cup contenders with this group. Monahan has been probably my favorite flames player for years but I'm ready for him, Johnny, and pretty much anyone else to be shipped off.

There had better be a ton of deals in the off season this year. Otherwise I'm not sure I can watch anymore of this pain.

The funny thing is that this isn't even the first time we've seen it with this team before. This team is definitely cursed.

Anyone remember the years following the 2004 non-Cup...every year it was a couple new promising signings, remember Oli Jokinen LOL, Boumeester, guys like that..man, it was just like this era where we consistently were rated as contenders but the team just somehow played still like shit.

I mean this era is slightly different in that the team is mostly drafted and grown within the organization....but that obviously still isn't working, remember when everyone thought we would be the next Detroit Red Wings ROFL we are CURSED!!!!!

I'm going to respectfully disagree. With the exception of what ever is going on right now I think Chucky has absolutely shown incredible leadership and should be the next C. This little... what ever it is... just highlights that he's not quite ready for it just yet and has a bit more maturing to do. But if (and that's a big IF) Gio is exposed and gets taken by the Kraken you can bet your ass Chucky will step up. Backlund is really the only other guy I think of as a leader but he definitely doesn't have the grit we've come to expect from a Flames captain like Nieuwendyk, Fleury, Iggy, or Gio.

Nesterov is horrible. I'm not a Leivo fan either but Nesterov really gets under my skin. Why Kylington is on the taxi squad over that plug is beyond me.

At least can all agree Mangiapani has been playing phenomenal these last two years and I'm happy to see him really make his presence known.

So can we please play the kids now and give markstrom some rest? If we injure that guy in these meaningless games it's a horrendous misuse of an asset.
