Any thoughts on the new AMD CPU's? 7950x3D/7900x3D chips are out. They appear excellent for gaming and productivity workloads.

7800x3D is due out in April but the current sentiment is that it will just be a gaming chip that matches the 7950x3D for gaming performance.

The real question for my new build is a GPU. I posted earlier about getting a 7900XTX but now I'm doubting it. Might look at a 4090 as I need best performance for flight sim. And I think the 40 series cards eek that out.

Well it is a lot. But then you say "need best performance for flight sim" which the 4090 does. So just do it

NW location even has 2 in stock. The Strix has a better cooler on it than the TUF.

I did it. 7950x3D and 4090. Still sourcing rest of build but I'm moving forward with this. Pretty big step up compared to current rig.

Are you aiming for 4k? Are the screens good enough yet?

Always 4k on MSFS with all settings maxed out. Using a LG C1 55". Yeah, very taxing.

Have watched a number of benchmark vids on youtube with that setup. Looking very, very nice with all settings maxed out plus FSLTL traffic at hand crafted airports.

I would buy a new drive unless your running a decent drive you've upgraded to in the last 4-5 years as well, if your not installing a ton of apps, a 500GB is probably fine, but a 1TB gives you a bit of breathing room.

You also want to check your PSU, make sure its a quality brand and has enough wattage for the new expected system with some headroom.

Seasonic PSU are what I always try to run, if not, one of the eVGA ones that is built by...Seasonic.

I have a 13900k/4090 system I built before Xmas, running a 27" LG 4k Gsync that is excellent for popular games LG 27GP95R-B, and I liked it so much I bought another one for our other system, which I'm going to upgrade/build here shortly. I also have an LG OLED 65" that I have connected to my office PC, and the 4090 works well with that when I use it to goof around. I'm considering picking up the Asus ROG Swift PG42UQ 42" OLED - saw it in a shop and was blown away, very impressed.

Seasonic has PSUs now that are compatible with the new plugs on the 40xx RTX cards. Their VERTEX 1200 is in my 13900k system, and comes with a 16pin cable for the 4090, which = no adaptor needed, and less bending cable issues which has resulted in quite a few burned up connection ports on these cards.

16Hypen3sp - congrats, I came very close to getting that 7950 chip myself instead of the 13900k, and I may grab one of the new AMD chips coming out in April-ish for our other/wife's system. I use my system for mainly flight sim games as well, I do QA/testing for 2 3rd party creator/teams with Digital Combat Simulations (my friend Carl Norman was the CEO of DCS back in the early/Flanker days, before he went to work for DARPA). I too am putting time in with MSFS, they've done such a great job with this version of Microsoft Flight sim.

I'm running the Varjo Aero VR unit now, I've had them all since the first Rift up to the Aero (which is about $3k CAD once you get it landed in Canada and buy the 2 wall camera/trackers you need for it). So worth it though, the Reverb G2s I was using for the last year or two were great, but this is a whole new level, a lot of the same tech as in the PSVR, just on steroids by comparison. It's fantastic for racing/driving games too, I'm awaiting my Fanatec order to be shipped, and then I'll spend some time in the usual suspects driving games.
