I don’t really see how transfer case settings make a material difference in how bad duratracs are at stopping on ice?
More for starting on ice and for handling while on ice. I could hardly get my truck out of the driveway in 2 when it was sheet ice with duratracs. Agreed regarding stopping (though i think Jalopnik showed more then once that a vehicle in 4WD does stop faster then one in 2WD with all the rest being the same), but 4Hi does handle better on ice then 2hi..

I think 60-70% of my winter gas usage is spent on remote start anyway.
That's the real solution to all problems.

When in 2wd, the M+s tires may give you problems on icy and slick surfaces, as noted already.
In 4wd, I found they performed fine.

Ran blizzaks and I think they are the best winters around, but this was on a camry. They weren't perfect but they made me feel extremely confident for any winter condition thrown at me.
Ran toyo walnut studded tires for a winter in 2018 and found they were okay. While upgrading to the studs wasn't expensive, I don't think in the City they were all that useful.

Overall, I think it really depends on how much you actually drive and where. If you need to hit the slopes and travel in the mountains when it snows, I think you need a dedicated studded winter tire.

However, if you drive solely in the city, I think the M+S all terrains will be more than fine. You may need to switch to 4wd more often but I think they will be nice when the chinooks hit as they always do.

I actually am somewhat questioning my decision to grab some BF KO2s now, but it was approved by Quebec for winter driving, so.....thats good right?

I took a job up at sun peaks resort by kamloops this winter. My 2016 Sierra 2500 has the stock Michelin LTX AT2 tires.. they have about 20k on them so lots of tread life. I’m not sure how they will handle the conditions up on the mountain. I may swap them out for a set of studded duratracs but I may try them out first.. I drove the coquihalla the other day and there was about 10 cm of snow and they handled it pretty well.

Can't you get fined for driving on the coquihalla with those tires?

They are M+S rated and as such are fully legal.

They use big letters for "mandatory winter tires" then say 3PMS (three peak mountain snowflake) OR M+S.

    It is bullshit. But whatev.

Yeah, bullshit for someone in a lightweight SUV or car with M&S tires that isn't going to have any traction in slippery conditions. Different story in a heavier vehicle that might get by just fine on M&S. I get why they wrote the law that way, it would be a big burden for farm and commercial vehicles to need true winters.

    definitely dedicated winters.

Used Michelin LTX AT2 for the first week it snowed then put on studded hakkas and the difference is still night and day.

I can still drive like a complete dickhead with my Michelin defenders and not run into stopping or sliding issues. I really don't get it.

I really don't get it either, I'm sliding around on my Toyo AT II's lol, it's slick on the side roads.. need to do more organizing in my garage so i can swap to my winters lol

i don't think there is really an argument that you can't drive on AT's in winter, its just waaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy better on good winters

Well this will be my second winter on my duratracs so we will see how it goes I guess?

I’m open to winters, but I maintain that my truck and duratracs haven’t given me any reason/desire to upgrade yet. Maybe that’s just dumb luck, maybe it’s not.

Luckily, it’s not like it’s tough to buy some new tires on a whim if my opinion changes.

Yeah, I'm with JfuckinC. By no means am I calling the all-seasons folks dumb or dangerous. I'm just sharing my preferences and experience.

I don't know how many times I have stated that in BC all season tires with a minimum 3.5mm tread depth are acceptable as per the governments own regulations, but I guess it needs it one more time! haha!

    https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/t...t-winter-tires

Basically, just no pure summer tires. I am not arguing for all season tires being the smart decision by any stretch of there imagination, but the minimum LEGAL requirement is this.

We really just need to get the insurance companies on board with discounts for using winter tires.

I noticed TD has this in Ontario when I was going over their available coverage discounts, nothing for AB though.

So since Duratracs are simultaneously the best and worst winter tires, I think I'll play it safe and run two of them on the driver's side. What should I run on the passenger side on a 7000lb truck? Blizzak DMV2 seems be the way this thread would recommend, yeah?
