AT M+S or Winter Tires???

What are you guys opinion on winter setup for a 4wd truck? Am currently running stock rims with A/T M+S tires but am interested in going with a set of winters for winter clearly. Are the A/T M+S ok for the winters we have here with hardpacked snow and ice or are winter tires the way to go? Was out in Lake Louse on Tuesday and even with 4x4 on, just didn't feel confident from a stopping perspective. Thinking winters are the way to go.

I put hankook ipike on my 2012 ram for winter within 2 years of owning it from new. No regrets. Not the best winter tire, but better than any all season in winter. They lasted till I sold the truck in early 2020 and so did the all season that was factory, I had the exact same rims for both. The all season were due for replacement when I sold the truck but my opinion is that if it extends the life of your all season tire why not have good traction all year round.

Yah I switch from toyo AT II’s to dedicates winters that are studded, have been for 7 years no regrats.

Ive been running michelin defender ltx on my 3/4 tonne and havent had any issues in the ice and snow. I vote for a good m+s rated tire with siping.

In our weather, even a cheap winter tire will perform better than a good all-season I think. Winter tires for sureeeee

I normally would have just stuck with a AT All Season but now that I am 40 mins outside the city I am going to be using winter tires on the truck.

as long as your plan is long term, the extra set of tires wont add value to your car if you sell it before they're spent.


For my truck i am getting a new set of Duratracs, they're a great AT as well as good on ice.

AT's suck on ice. If you're driving on a lot of it, get winters. If not, you'll probably be ok with AT's

I've got a set of winters in the marketplace, almost brand new if you're interested.

Here's my take on trucks and winter tires.
1) while moving forward, quality AT tires are fine.
2) more than 50% of Calgary city conditions, AT tires are fine.
3) during whatever fraction of the winter that Calgary has packed snow and ice conditions, real winters are MUCH better for stopping, which is where you are going to have the majority of the accidents.

So, if you have the flexibility to drive less when conditions are bad, or drive like a grandma at the very least, maybe AT tires are okay. But true winters are truly better.

I'm running through this decision myself right now, since I bought the 2nd set of rims. But, I'm also not driving as much as I used to, and we have one vehicle with true winter tires already.

No one should have the flexibility to drive like a grandma because they didn't want to get winters.

If you must do so, ensure that your hazards are on the entire time.

Winter tires are preferred. I have been using studded General Grabber A/TX on my 3/4 ton diesel and felt good though. Switching to studded Duratracs this year plus carry chains with me.

Same for me. I've always bought Blizzaks. The biggest thing for winter tires is stopping distances in the cold weather. M+S or all seasons don't compare.

I wanted to be twinsies and get Blizzaks this year but I got a great deal on the Nokians. Maybe in a few years when the WS100 comes out.

Winters for sure. Everyone thinks they are the best driver until that one situation comes up where you wish you had them. Like was said above, it's not that much more expensive in the long run since you use each set half the time.

I like BFG AT2s better than Duratracs, but I can't imagine either of them are better than winter tires. I don't think I've ever driven on winter tires in my life so I wouldn't be able to compare. I had a Trans Am that I drove with BFG Radial T/As and Cooper Cobras for 4 winters, and I had Interco M16s for a winter on a work truck. That was unpleasant.

You can get around on ATs easily enough but you spend a lot of time searching around for grip on the edges of your lane and listening for changes in the sound your tires make. It's a bad sign when things suddenly get quiet.
