RCMP will target your AB plate. My sister and family moved back to NL a few months ago and were pulled over entering and just before leaving NB, and were required to show proof they had a residence on the island each time. They were told they could be turned back if they didn't have proof, even though they were just passing through, but who knows if that was just that cop being a dink. No other repercussions were mentioned.

Flight/ fuel/ hotels are going to run you $1400 at least, remember it’s 5000km of driving with much higher gas prices, during a shitty time of year to be driving long distances. Factor in fast food and your time and you are much better off shipping.

I’ve driven the entire length of the TCH and it’s a great trip, but wouldn’t think of it in the winter unless necessary. If you were doing this in May-October, would for sure be worth it.
