Let's say a large tech company sends you a three 3-packs of something instead of just 3 of those things as ordered, what do you do? These are expensive things.
Keep?
Email them about the error?
Email them and gloat from an anonymous address?

I'm a cheap bastard, so my first inclination would be to keep and sell. But....... That's probably not the right move.

I’m all for being honest, but it’s well documented that by sending it back you aren’t doing the company any favours and they will likely landfill them rather than assess for resale.

You are a right wing bastard. Therefore you will return 3, use 3, resell the rest in 6 months after the heat is off. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I'd contact them and ask them what they want to do. They might say fuck it and let it go. Worst case is you have to package it back up and send it back. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It's easier to do that if you can connect the error to a human. If it was a faceless monstrosity like Microsoft I'd have a harder time working up the ambition to do it. On the other hand, if they find out about the error they might more aggressively ask you to either return it or pay for it.

I would email them. Maybe as a token of appreciation they will give you something back like a gift card? And if not then whatever, at least you know you did the ethical thing in the end.

Probably email, but wind up keeping/selling. It's somewhat contingent on what "expensive" is.
$100? $1000? $10000? (per widget)
The higher the number is, the more effort I would expend on rectifying it.
