Default Expanding Hoses and Lightweight hoses

I know there was a lot of chatter about this a while back, but I can't find it.
Need some lightweight hose options for my mother, because she's old, like even older than @speedog old. She loves gardening though, and is using her hoses like 6 days a week in the summer.

I have some of these lightweight hoses from Lee valley for myself. They are good quality and I like em.

But what's the deal with these expanding Hoses? They junk? Is one brand better than others?

I had them at my old place, I ended up binning them all after ~3 years (XHose pro?). Leaks, tangling, pretty much all the stuff Billy May’s warned us about back in the day.

Instead I just use a regular hose on a rolling caddy with a little crank to retract.

There was a thread about these years ago. I remember rage2 saying he bought the original before the product got popular, and it was awesome, but then the quality went to shit when they started being available everywhere.

Is it still holding out for you @rage2 ?

Nice. Yeah if anyone from back then is still happy, that's sufficient durability for me. That thread is 6 years old.

We buy one every couple of years. Might not be super reliable especially if it’s left out in winter accidentally but can’t live without it.

So 2 year lifespan? That would drive my mother insane. (or insane-er).

My expanding hose lasted weeks. It was either completely useless shit, or, leaving it in the sun completely destroyed it.
No leaks. It ruptured like a balloon.

Size: 322.9 KBI have a couple of no kink ones at home that are several years old and I like them. (Not this brand) They look like flat folded cloth when empty. My other ones I carry in my work service truck, red high temp rated rubber that’s more than a decade old and is left in the sun and outside in the winter most days. Probably last me another 10 years.

I have a light weight kobalt hose that I picked up on sale at lowes a couple years back. It's been great, and I've left it out during the winter, as well as full pressure water for a week during the summer (i.e. faucet on, but sprayer off), and no problems. Would buy again.

I bought one from Costco this spring. Wasn't X-hose. It's outside right now... shit.

Let's see if it leaks in the spring. CAn't remember the brand.

    EDIT:

I've gotten cheap hoses (no surprises when they crack) and expensive hoses with lifetime warranty from Walmart. None are left attached to the water over the winter and sit on a reel. One even comes in the garage on a portable reel.

If someone can direct me to a 100ft hose that can last 10 years, I would gladly pay a premium for it.

The heavy duty black rubber ones. Mine have lasted a decade now, and I leave them outside year-round too. Though I do blow them out in the fall.

The last commercial-rate hose I got had the brass fitting come off. Nothing attached over the winter and it was about 2 years old.

Any hose rated for hot water or commercial use will last a very long time. They will likely be more than $1 / ft and I’ve seen them available at even Rona or Canadian Tire. Greenline Hose on Blackfoot trail is also a great source for cash sales.

I had a commercial hose and the brass fitting came off (tore) from basic household use.

If you want, I’ve got a 100’ industrial hose that I don’t need. Only 2 years old. You can have it.

Or just cut the old end off and put a new one on? Free sounds good too.
