Telus Boost wifi

Anyone have the Telus boost wifi things? We had a telus guy in replacing our TV box and a talked him into giving me one of the expansion packs. Do I need to have the "starter kit" or can I set up this one only?

if you have a large house, both Telus and Shaw wifi devices are a joke.

Boosting garbage just means more garbage.

I don't know how much it's needed for in the house, but more for when I build a garage. Plus free garbage is still free. I'm sure it won't be worse than not having it. But I'm not sure about /dont know Jack about"networking " stuff

Unless your garage and the wifi source are close to the exterior walls (minimal distance apart), the ISP devices will likely not send a solid signal to a detached garage. And I have seen then make thing worse as well.

You can certainly try and then upgrade down the road. Years ago I put a cheap, ASUS WIFI unit on the window ledge and I was able to get decent enough wifi (enough for music and websites) in the detached garage about 30ft away.

Currently the router is in the basement, on the wall closest to where the garage will be. Should only be 20-30feet away. Music/youtube would be what it's for. Thinking about it, I will prob just run a cat6, since I will need to dig a trench for power/gas.

How do these typically work? Is it just like an antenna? Receives the signal, amplifies it and re sends it out? Or does it need to be plugged into the router?

I have the Telus boosters one on each floor (4800 sqFt House) not sure if i can notice a differences.

i did get Telus to install a new Modem its called the Telus Wifi Hub

If the router is below grade, you will get fuck all for signal in the garage, save for any Telus repeater (which could help in this case).

Running network cable is far preferred - with then a WAP device (non ISP) in the garage (50-100$)

Barring that, a good non ISP WAP in the house will ensure WIFI in the garage. If you need to connect something to the LAN with a cable, you can bridge the WAP as well.

WAP = wireless access point - this is a 'dumb', wifi only access point (no routing functions). Your router is separate from this unit.

Is the telus booster a WAP? What is bridging the wap?

that is a just a wifi repeater - some repeaters also double as bridge devices though, so you could be repeating the wifi signal and have devices hard wired to it.


a WAP is a standalone wifi access point that is WIRED (lan) to the network.
