A mod should merge most of this thread with the one boosting how holistic medicine is awesome.
Most vitamins and supplements have zero science behind their benefits, and some are long term bad for you.
Vitamin D is proven though.
What food are you getting your vitamin D from? Selenium? Magnesium? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Difference of opinion, or just lack of education (honestly not trying to be rude) - I spent my late 20's losing energy and spent tons of time researching this stuff. Now at 34 I feel better than ever.
But to the point of the thread, humans didn't evolve to get 10 minutes of sun on our face, cover up our bodies, and never interact with it otherwise, that's why our vit d levels are shit and we have to supplement - especially in Canada
People attribute 'blue zones' mostly to food, but it's no coincidence they are overwhelmingly in sunny, warm areas.

For speedog and extraslow - Go get all of your vitamin and mineral levels tested and let me know how they look. Then optimize them and see how you feel. Only way to tell.
Not sure why people are so opposed to supplements or think its so ridiculous based off our factory farming mono crop food supplies.
so is this a real thing you can just get? I was pretty sure Alberta health said they wouldn't waste the money on vitamin D tests and said everyone should just supplement regardless. Do doctors get blood tests on otherwise healthy people? Are people getting these tests privately?Go get all of your vitamin and mineral levels tested

Doc has run tests, no real issues. Diet is quite varied which includes lots of fresh fruits and raw vegies and good sources of fiber and I'm outside every week day for at least a few hours. My current occupation keeps me physically fit and I really do not feel run down at all, actually I am in better shape now than I was 10-20 years ago. Don't do drugs, very little alcohol consumption and do not see the need to ingest supplements - sorry if that's offensive.
Imagine all the nice food you could buy each week instead of wasting your money on supplements.
I believe many you can get from your doc, (I happen to have a lab req in front of me haha) I have done private ones using my health spending of naturopath though. Not very expensive to get a full array done. Selenium is a real kicker in my opinion, critical for male health and testosterone, and the only foods with appreciable quantities are brazil nuts and shellfish and organ meats, of which i used to eat none. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Developing a good relationship with your primary care physician is key. But you know that.
Tell him you’re curious about your 25-OH Vitamn D levels because you work inside all day and feel fatigued. Also say you figure it’s not hormonal (such as low testosterone) and hopefully your reverse psychology allows that test too.
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age."

Not offensive, if that's actually your case then you're likely 1 in 100 of people. No drugs and alcohol likely really help too. Im not saying supplements are a live and die type thing, but imo can really boost quality of life and is also cheap insurance for living long and healthy. Thats how I treat them. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

My supplement usage (outside of protein powder) is probably $100 a month. If I was broke, it would probably go, luckily im in a place where I don't view that as an egregious / unnecessary expense. I know im an outlier, especially based on responses in this threadThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Totally, and if he won't allow it, just pay. It's what... 60 bucks? Second to maintaining a healthy weight and probably cancer screenings as you age, I can't think of one thing more important than vit d.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

For the full panel? One good Dr (disclaimer... naturopath haha) I saw was at that pure north clinic that everyone was up in arms about that received government funding for quack natural health stuff. I guess that Pure North clinic has closed, but my most recent email says this - I received for 110 bucks a introductory blood test panel, plus the appointment charge of 140.
Dr. Ludo, Elevated Health.. looks like he's there.

I probably sound preachy in some of my comments, and don't mean too but going down this rabbit hole really improved alot of aspects of my life.
If this is your first trip i'd recommend doing a full panel of some sort.. I remember I just did the basic as I had lots of info already from past tests and was just trying to use up my naturopath money for the year.
Good luck!
I truly believe genetics plays a major role as well - any of my relatives, who haven't had substance abuse issues, have all lived into their 90s. My parents, both 85, are just starting to get old, slowing down. My one grandmother died at 97 and mostly because she said she was ready. None of my aged relatives took any real discernible amounts of vitamins/minerals - good food, varied diets and remaining relatively fit and at healthy weights. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Thats true too. People can definitely hit the genetic lottery. I just use supplements and all other healthy living tactics to stack the odds in my favor. Hell my grandparents on my dads side lived till 90 and were super obese and one smoked his whole life! This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
