You aren't wrong. But if we all had that attitude then we would never get our used vehicles fixed at all because of what "might be". It sure would be nice to have a vehicle under warranty, but we aren't all loaded.

Consider this a lesson learned, IMO. These transmissions are notoriously difficult. Everyone turning down the reman job locally should've been a huge red flag. Unfortunately, the rebuilder is probably great with conventional transmissions, but these ZF units require so many proprietary processes that there's no way this guy would've been doing a factory spec reman.

I wouldn't spend any more money on it. Cut your losses, walk away. Don't be mired by sunk cost.

I'm surprised shops won't touch that transmission. It's the same trans as the 6R80 in thousands of Fords. Every Ford trans tech has overhauled them. I'm curious if the shops treat F150s like their transmissions are mysterious voodoo boxes too.
Apparently its not that easy and the proprietary tools required (reprogram, software, etc.) make it doubly so.

I liked them, but I became a Ford trans tech with the 6F35 and 6R80 transmissions hitting the market so I didn't have the chance to be blessed by easier stuff. Haha. The specialty tools aren't that special. It would be easy to adapt something aftermarket or make your own stuff. Where it would get you would be in programming. If it was just an overhaul you could do it without the dealer scantool as long as you had something that could erase the TCM keep alive memory and perform an adaptive drive cycle.

I guess I found a sweet opportunity to buy my next vehicle by looking for something with a bad trans that everyone is afraid of. Haha
Is that maybe the missing here? Not being able to properly reprogram the TCU?

He said he was able to reset the adaptations, which as far as I know is all he really needed to do after the rebuild considering it was obviously already programmed to my vehicle. Still, one has to wonder whether it was the mechanical parts itself that were causing the issue or the electronic mech/solenoids. Note that according to the TCU, everything was operating properly with no error codes.

Now, when he puts the used unit in I'm not sure if he plans to use the mech/tcu from the doner vehicle, or swap the mech unit from my old tranny to the used one. If he leaves the used TCU on the used tranny and it turns out not to work, he likely doesn't have the software to program it to my vehicle. But on the other hand, if he swaps my old TCU onto the used tranny that could be a problem because the previously reset adaptations would assume the tranny was new, and treat it as such. Apparently, this is a way to end the life of the transmission quickly according to some who have tried it.

Messy messy messy. And now yet another week has passed with no contact from him, so I'm gonna have to call and see wtf is up this time, considering he got the go-ahead on Friday to drop the used one in. Shipping from Ft. Saskatchewan should only have taken a day or two so I suspect he's struggling once again with something...

    Never again.

Now you got me curious how the next generation will hold up (2015+). The body refresh is nice.

I feel Rat Fink should have rebuilt your transmission.

LoL, I didn't even realize. I think my CD of that came from Columbia House so it was the Radio Edit, too. And, of course the springy plastic things in the middle of the CD case were broken.
It's possible I never actually heard the real shit until I saw them in concert.
