And it isn't just a jerk. It's an actual bang... intermittently. I trust him on his assessment, since I felt it once before bringing it in and it really was hard.
RoFL! Is that what that noise was??!
I was at a traffic light and stepped on it pretty good upon green in my car and this goof beside me in a Range Rover decided we were racing. I heard the most unholy sound come from one of our vehicles, but I honestly couldn't tell which due to the echo/reverb from where the vehicles were positioned. It sounded like a snapped driveshaft!
But, my car kept going and the British thing did British things while pulling over.
    LoL at that sound!!

Kloubek is a stand-up guy. Not surprised he ended up with this solution with the shop. Nicely done.
Thanks man. Some of you are acting like I'm a hero or something. Fact is, this world would be a lot better of a place if we all worked together more and tried to understand each others positions. When he offered me to take it as-is, it said to me he was willing to do whatever he could to make it right. Work with me, I work with you. I would like to think most of us would have come to a solution that didn't involve raping the poor guy.

ThePenIsMightier: Nah... not me. Street racing days are all but over, and despite 400hp, these still aren't what I would call fast.

Oh LoL! It wasn't at all like I was suggesting it was you!
Just commenting on the apparently chronic problems with these trannies.

No, I didn't *actually* think you thought that. Would have been hilarious though.

I actually hadn't heard TOO much about banging gears. Usually it is actual failure from the main bushing inside, or solenoid issues on the HP16. Most last past the 200k mark if they had the filters changed once or twice...

I'll guess August? I wasn't racing so I certainly wasn't paying attention to the Rover but I'm pretty sure it was a dark colour, if that narrows it down, LoL!
I'm suddenly like an eyewitness to a crime! Definitely not white or silver.
Oh shit! Now I'm accusing a vehicle of colour! I'm a walking hate crime of unconscious bias!

It was way south on 2A headed towards the junction with 2, I think.

I think you did the right thing, good on you @Kloubek for not trying to screw over small businesses in this crappy economy.

Definitely sounds like the guy bit off more than he could chew, but looks like you were able to come to a good resolution that worked for both of you.

I don't think the typical owner knows this. these fuckers are stoplight racing 24/7.

I wonder what the age demographic is of the typical owner. I am getting old, I have zero interest in doing that with anyone nowadays.

I'm not really one to talk, I race people in my F150 and my wife's minivan. Racing is life.

I race people with my 1.4L of fury in the Honda Fit... Most people just don't know that we are racing though.

My W/L record speaks for itself.

Can confirm that the Fit is the ultimate racecar.

So maybe LRs are built to excellent standards, and its just the guys who race them who cause all the failures.

    Dare to dream.

I did. They said they weren't too interested in working on transmissions. Maybe just not the ZF.

So, I reached a compromise with the shop 20 minutes ago. He did say I could just come down and pick it up as is at no charge, but knowing all the money he sunk into it, I didn't want to do that to him. We agreed to $4500 for the used transmission with 115k, and a 1 year warranty. Its not THAT much more than I would have paid for a used swap to start with, and the warranty is worth something to me.

At least this way we both walk away with a handshake.
    This is the right way.

    Plot twist.

The guy never actually rebuilt it because it was far more complex than he initially thought, and after being called out about being 6 weeks late he makes an excuse about how its still shifting badly after rebuild. Offers no charge because he didn't do anything, but is now making out like a bandit on the used unit.

Mind you I'm a pessimist when it comes to mechanics.

    Just as a thought exercise....

What good is it to have this guy waranty it for a year? If this used one fails, is he qualified to fix it? How is this mechanic going to warrany it? I mean the guy sounds like a stand up dude, but, being nice doesn't fix broken transmissions...

Honestly, I don't think he would have taken it on if he didn't feel like he could fix it. He was the one two other shops directed me to when they found out I wanted a ZF rebuilt, and he claims to have done several before.

    You guys are downers.

I am not meaning to be a downer at all. But my mind usually works like this: Expect the worst, hope for the best. So like I said, it is just a thought exercise for me, and I am thinking aloud so in my mind, if the used tranny packs it in during the first year, you are right back here where you were 2 days ago...

But, again, that would be a worst case scenario.
