Default Connecting Old Receivers to New TVs

I was at my parents place and I found an old Onkyo TX-SR800 receiver they are no longer using just sitting in the basement. It was a great receiver back in the day and I took it home to see if it still works with modern equipment.

The speaker connections are fine and there no issues there. What I'm struggling with now is getting it to connect to a modern TV and other components that use HDMI with no analog. Instead of purchasing a bunch of converters to plug components into the receiver, would it work if I were to plug in all the HDMI components (Roku, cable box, PS4 etc) into the TV and use a digital optical out from the TV into the receiver? That seems to be an easier route but I'm not sure if that would work.

Buy a new receiver that utilizes ARC, you won't be able to pass through most audio through the optical

That's what I previously did. Inputs into TV, and then audio optical out to receiver. Worked fine.

I wouldn’t put even 1 dollar into trying to make that receiver work.

If you are interested I have a Sony DN840 sitting on a shelf right now that I really should sell. Supports 4K but not HDR.

This is why I can use any old receiver with optical input (audio) - because I have purpose built PC for this.

HDMI out to TV and optical out to receiver for audio.

Lapboard and gaming keyboard = win.
