Default Government jobs are gravy - MEGA THREAD

Good spot for @Buster and others to discuss how most government jobs are unreasonably well paid and wildly attractive careers.
    Firefighters, EMS, Teachers, Nurses etc.

Posted in politics sub-forum not careers because of the focus on government fiscal priorities and budgets.

Seems good in the low times. Not sure about the good times. Saw an article yesterday about the aupe protesting a 4% wage rollback. Not sure if they'll get any sympathy.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmon...vice-1.5793131

"To come now, during a pandemic, it is certainly surprising and disappointing," Barry said. "To come and ask the public sector workers to make up for their failure to provide jobs for Albertans is really not going to help the economy."
    Seriously..

"The mandate presented to the union reflects the province's current economic and fiscal reality," Toews said.

"The government is asking unionized public service employees to be part of the solution, as we face the worst economic crisis in nearly a century.

"This is a fair and reasonable offer. The union's in-going proposal is asking for a five per cent raise, while thousands of Albertans working in the private sector have already taken pay cuts."
Went in asking for a 5% raise :|

Question, do you think all government employees are over paied? Yes there is the sunshine list that pay themselves well but most are hardly paied well at all.

deja vu all over again.....I feel we have covered this discussion numerous times since UCP got elected.

Why is this news again? If anything, I would go after the ATB folks, those are the one that's not on the sunshine list and gets paid up the ying yangs.

A different thread got derailed with this discussion, and I'm not a mod who can split or clean up threads, so I started this thread to allow both conversations to continue separately.

Don't see the problem here. Anyone is free to chose their career path.

My wife's friend works for the CRA. She's been working from home since March, her workload is roughly 90% lower to the point she works maybe 30 minutes a day tops, and she gets full pay. She's not on the sunshine list, but she makes alone what the average couple brings in across Canada. My wife's father is a retired firefighter. He made captain. His take home pension is 5k/m. And her mother also works for the government, same juicy benefits as the two previous anecdotes.

Moral of the story? My wife should be working for the government

First time I've ever seen an EMS being described as "unreasonably well paid."

I heard every government union job fits that description.

I think the conversation was around firefighters originally. I have no idea if they are well paid or not. But they seem to all be able to ride two careers in parallel. I think it is also really hard to become a firefighter, not sure. But it seems like the supply of people willing to become firefighters exceeds the demand - if that's the case, then they are almost certainly over-compensated almost by definition.

My all-time dream job is to sit a desk with a big red button and a trapdoor. Government employees walk up to the desk, get 30 seconds to explain what they do and what value they bring. At the end of 30 seconds, they either go back to work, or I hit the big red button.

I would do this job for free.

I don't think everyone understands what "government jobs" are. Or it's possible that I don't understand.
Nearly every job you have listed are people that work (unionized) in the Public Sector. That's not a government job.
People with government jobs work for The Ministry of _______ either federally or provincially, or, some government related activity at the municipal level.
They're not even close. Not same stadium. Not same sport. Picking up garbage cans, wiping elderly ass, putting out fires, or giving meth heads an ambulance ride to the hospital is not government work. Unless your tears and blood are lubricating the square-cut gears of soulless, bureaucratic redundancy, you don't have a "government job".

The person who mentioned the CRA worker? That's a gov't job. Ensuring the gaming proceeds from the Flames 50/50 doesn't line the pockets of thieves is a gov't job. Managing the forestry licenses for Weyerhaeuser so they don't shave a federal park to the dirt and leave is a gov't job. Allowing Syncrude to pour some water atop the WIP tailings pond and rename it Base Mine Lake so it counts as reclaimed land is a gov't job.

There are not many people making piles of money in actual gov't jobs. And, they all hate their jobs with every fiber of their being. Those that make it "all the way" to $101k end up on some horse shit Nazi list by the socialist gov't (that fucking employs them) because their voters can't fathom making more than $15/hr for 31.5hr/week from their mom's basement. Those jobs are unstable and they get shuffled about and lost upon the next gov't whims. Sweet!

So, if you're happy with $70k collecting fractions of the stolen GST money from crooked cab drivers while answering to eleventy layers of terrible policies and mgmt... I guess that's gravy. In my opinion, that gravy is full of pubes and I don't want it.

^ Perfect description of gov't jobs..

Worked for the Dept. of Municipal Affairs in 2011/12 doing water resource planning. Not only was the job painfully boring but everybody I worked with was in a constant haze of despair.

Or maybe they were baked 24/7. Hard to tell.

I just want to watch the TV show that would come out of this. Like Dragon's Den but with more severe consequences.
