100% a bird box. I ended up doing the same thing with a flicker at my last house, I could not stop it from going after my siding till I finally built it a nest box
It is actually legal to shoot and kill magpies, but it's very sticky. You shall not shoot where a miss will not land and your property, so that adds significant complexity. They rarely die when struck with these fucking nerf'd pellet guns, so you have to go murder it with a shovel and your neighbours seeing that is undesirable. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. *Assuming Edmonton had same laws as Calgary, which is likely. I think it's probably provincial.
My friend has killed dozens and claims to have found it incredibly satisfying. Magpies are complete vermin.
I'm guessing you can't kill woodpeckers, though... I can't recall where I found the proof that you can shoot magpies, but I believe it was key that they are non-migratory.
I think a "wandering head owl" might help.

He put up a small bird house to try and attract other birds so the woodpecker wouldn't peck his house. Smaller hole, I can't get it though. I dunno why he did that....but I don't think it worked. Or maybe he built it for the woodpecker but again, I don't think it helped. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Bummer. I'll defer to your expertise as a firearm enthusiast rather than digging up however I found that it seemed legal from Edmonton. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Just came back from shooing away the fucker that's destroying my house. These birds are the goddamn worst.
I don't get why they'd peck at a house. I've got a beautiful Flicker that stops by every once in awhile and I'm pretty sure he's just scooping bugs off j-channels and vinyl siding lips. I don't see any harm.
Magpies... all need to die, always.
I'm not sure why they go after stucco, but we used to live in an older place with wooden siding and the woodpeckers had a field day - it was awful. They would peck the wood looking for bugs. Right on the other side of our bedroom wall too.
Woodpeckers love stucco and hammer away at it like it's got cocaine underneath. I don't know why, but it's a common problem. My bro's house in Rosedale has 4 holes each larger than a softball from those fuckers.

They go after my out too... it’s not even stucco... vinyl siding. At times it sounds like they’re hitting the flashing too.
We have a couple flickers around and they just poke around at our fence. Guess we are lucky.
Fuckers have put holes in this same spot on my brothers house three times. Stucco repair is a recurring item for him.

Ive got 2 woodpeckers visiting my property off and on. One is a downy woodpecker that drilled a couple inch diameter hole in the exterior wall. Had it repaired (eifs) and little bastard still comes by randomly. Also saw a flicker 2 days ago in the tree out front. Much bigger than the downy but luckily this one didnt peck the house and just stuck to the trees. If you are going to shoot it, try and find an angle where your neighbours cant see and you have a safe backdrop. For example, sneak up below it and shoot into your soffit so if you miss the soffit will catch the round. Use a .177 air rifle. Its illegal so dont do it/get caught.
I think there are 2 reasons they peck houses. Usually they are looking for bugs below the surface to eat or making a nest hole. Either way, they like the eifs cause it makes a good noise to start then they get to the soft foam inside. Eifs is a shit product too, wish I had gone with hardy board.

Tap, Rack, BANG!
Is EIF that synthetic/acrylic stucco?
I haven't heard good things...
Here I thought that we were screwed with our cedar siding - but these thngs get into everything almost !
Some of the Nerf guns out there have got some reasonable velocity. It's not going to actually harm anything but perhaps annoy the bastards enough that they leave your friend's place alone.
