Default Who do you donate, volunteer, and/or fundraise for?

Spun off from the Beyond.ca Keychain thread, what charities and organizations do you guys donate, volunteer, and/or fundraise for? If you guys have a cause you believe in, here's your chance to make a sales pitch!

    I donate yearly to

    Alberta Children's Hospital:
    https://www.childrenshospital.ab.ca/...ing&df_id=2440

    Make-A-Wish Southern Alberta:
    https://makeawishsa.ca/donate

We've had a young family member impacted by cancer years ago and have benefited from both these organizations, so it's a no brainer for me. It's also for this reason that I make regular blood donations.

And I volunteer at the Calgary Humane Society.

We mentor an inner city School and provide an annual holiday lunch to all the students (cancelled this year for the covid unfortunately), there are several local charities that are focused on under-privileged kids that we support like Care & Share and HelpOne. Big Brothers Big Sisters is another annual commitment. Basically we focus our efforts on under-privileged kids but this year we have also assisted the Crisis Nursery, Food Bank and Friendship Inn. Oh, and always have a little love for Special Olympics.

Monetary donations, varies. Have and still do volunteer in the amateur wrestling scene, 15+ years now and don't even have any kids in the sport anymore. Platelet (blood donations) - approaching 180. Still a bit of community association volunteering as well.

Is the Rotary Club more like the Illuminati or more like the Mormons?

I used to lend to Millap years ago. Micro financing in India. It started off small where you could just drop a minimum of $25. The clients would pay back over time. Then you can just re-lend the money to someone else. It went on and on. My dad used to donate money to people in India. My mother used to lend. There was a huge difference in what people did in terms of results.
It hit home for me when my mother took me to her village when i was six years old in 1986. There was no toilet, locals has no access to credit to start their own enterprise either (except loan sharks). Everyone kept their own cow(s) for milk and dung for fire (cooking).

On Milaap you could pick a cause. So I mostly lent to women wanting to build toilets, or women wanting to take their own initiate to start their own business or expand their small enterprise, or in some cases education expenses for their children.
The business loans were very small. For example, one lady got the other women in the village and started their own garment making business. Things took off very very well but needed more money for raw materials and sewing machines etc. Another just needed more money to expand the dairy business or more goats. It had a 100% repayment rate.

Though things have changed on the site a lot and its not truely micro financing anymore. Much of the needs have moved to donations instead of micro financing.

Micro Financing is cool, I do Kiva and have for years. My few hundred bucks have been recycled dozens of times over.

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

Used to donate to United Way through work as well but with new management we no longer have any ties with UW so I'll be donating directly to the Calgary Food Bank and ACH

thanks for posting the links here, makes getting to the donation pages faster
