    Default Moving basement post

Hey beyond, i have this post at the bottom of my basement stairs which makes bringing any furniture down there impossible. Is there anyway to move it without affecting the structure of the house? Can i move it over a couple of inches etc? Has anyone done anything like this before? It is a 1970s built bungalow.

Is there a metal telepost under and those are just boards scabbed over it? Removing those boards might give you the room you need.
Man, that landing is small and probably not to code!

Guaranteed it is a telepost under those boards. It looks like it is holding up an end to a support beam. It *could* be moved, maybe, but if it can be moved, you would have to shore up the beam in another location close to it, move whatever you need, then put the telepost back into it's original location. I am not suggesting you do this or telling you it is ok to do it, I don't want to get sued. I am just saying that it *might* be possible. These also often get cemented into the ground too, so even if you take the nails out of the top portion, the bottom may not be moveable either. Only way to know for sure is to remove the cladding, and take a closer look.

There's no telepost behind there, just 2 2x4s sandwiched together. I dont want to take it out completely. Just move it over a couple of inches to be able to get furniture into the basement.

I'm curious how much that post is actually doing? Is there any walls above where that post is? And if so which way do they run in accordance to the house rafters?

Those 2x4's under there are probably still load bearing.
In my last house I removed a telepost in what was going to be the home theater. I had a structural engineer come out, look at the space and give me a couple of options. The one I went with involved bolting a couple of large C channels to either side of the beam and supporting them at either end of the span. Then it was just a simple matter of cutting the post out and hoping the kitchen wasn't relocated to the basement.

You should not move it without a structural engineer looking at it.... or move it and wait for the lulz. Your choice.

If he pays me for consulting engineering services, I offer to provide a 9 page written report that says the same thing.
