I laminated my card and every single time I got to the hospital they give me a warning about it.

I love how a completely destroyed remnant of what was once a shitty piece of paper is more easily proven 'genuine' than a laminated version looking like it did the way it was printed. it would be far easier to print a fake card, destroy most of it, and pass it off as original. They should just issue them on plastic like a DL or SSN.

Interesting. I've had mine laminated for the last 20 years. I've never been given a warning. (Edmonton area).

Sorry, I don't get it. If the systems being installed automatically recognize NEW plates (wonder how much that system costs in addition to the likely increased cost of new plate production) then it likely cannot scan old plates. And if that is true, how is a cop supposed to know if an old plate has valid registration if the owner isn't putting stickers on it anymore?

You are not thinking like government employee lol. May be we'll get the same improvement from those recent new ontario plates that no one can read.

I’ve played that game since 03 haha. Every sticker I have is basically the sticker I have on a new plate because the registry does it for you. Hope this shit is easy to peel off. When can we remove them?

I don't know, I'm pretty bad at reading these press releases.

So if I want to keep my old plate 8888 number, can I get that in the new version? Do I have to pay?

The heating up and peeling of stickers has left some scratches on it.

I stopped carrying my card years ago, have pictures on my phone of mine and my family's cards. Have never ever been questioned on them.

Its not automatic, its more a limitation of the scanner. License plate reader technology (LPR) is still pretty basic on high end systems. I haven't done any engineering or programming with it, but I have done a lot of work with testing some high end LPR systems. I think its almost like OCR and it needs contrast to pickup the letters.

Our current license plates are readable when clean and new, but it takes shockingly little mud, snow, salt, grime or letter fade to really mess up the characters being read.

The shiny plates should have a higher contrast to allow a better percentage of overall plates being read, but its not 100% on new and 0% on old. Id guess more like 80/30.

You know you could've just taken it to Staples and spent $1 for them to laminate it for you.

Calgary Parking seems to have no trouble auto-reading old plates
