Default Alberta to do away with licence plate expiry stickers

Oh piss off! I've been trying to grow my sticker stack so that it's thicker than the embossed letters

Now if only they would do away with the ratty paper Alberta Health Care Cards and combine it with your Alberta ID.

Beginning next year, Alberta drivers will no longer require expiry stickers on their licence plates.

The change will be effective Jan. 1, as the province moves toward adopting reflective licence plates. Stickers marking the month and year of registration will no longer be issued in 2021, and the change includes stickers for fleet vehicles and permanent trailers.

“Alberta’s government has been looking for ways to improve and modernize the delivery of registry services for Albertans,” Service Alberta Minister Nate Glubish said in a media release Monday morning.

“By moving to reflective licence plates, expiry stickers become redundant and outdated. This common-sense change cuts red tape, aligns Alberta with other Canadian provinces and saves taxpayers’ money.”

Alberta will transition to “high definition reflective licence plates” in fall 2021 and will be issued after the current stock of painted licence plates runs out, the province said Monday.

Glubish clarified that there is no new design and no requirement for people to change their plates.

“Starting in fall 2021, when an Albertan gets a new plate or exchanges their current one, they will automatically receive a reflective plate. Again, that reflective plate will have the same design as the current ones,” he said.

Specialty plates like the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Support Our Troops, personalized and veterans’ plates are already reflective, Glubish added.

The reflective plates are more easily scanned by automated licence plate readers, which will assist law enforcement agencies in validating licence plate registration roadside, according to the province.

“An advantage to reflective plates is increased security features and visibility for law enforcement,” Glubish said.

“We are bringing Alberta’s government into the 21st century and moving at the speed Albertans deserve,” Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction Grant Hunter said in a media release.

The province said the government currently spends about $1.2 million per year to print, ship and store expiry stickers for licence plates.

Alberta drivers will still be responsible for renewing their vehicle registration on time. Stickers will still be required for farm vehicles and prorated commercial vehicles participating in the International Registration Plan.

Registration expiry dates have been required on Alberta licence plates since 1974.

Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwest Territories have already done away with licence plate expiry stickers.

Alberta drivers can sign up for an electronic reminder of when it’s time to renew their registration on the province’s website.

That reminds me, I need to switch to my 6-digit plate. It's my renewal month anyway.

I got a Flames plate last year that I plan to use for the rest of my life, so I'll get stickers until I die?

So they save 1.2 million but need to issue out new plates to everyone... At what cost is that? Alberta has like 3.5 million drivers lol

Not like it matters between people running around with expired registration or not caring.. just one less thing to manage.

No need to swap or re-issue plates.

It's pretty obvious who in this thread didn't even read the article.

Glubish clarified that there is no new design and no requirement for people to change their plates.

I guess it's one of those spending $100M capex to save $1M/year opex kind of deal.

I laminated my AB Health card a long time ago. Looks mint. My SIN card on the other hand...

I wonder how the no-sticker registration will work for condos and townhouses. For example, there is a vehicle parked in my townhouse parking lot that has a plate that expired Feb. 2019; I just looked at it today. Iirc, that is against the condo bylaws (has to be able to be driven/roadworthy and not being stored in a parking spot). I suspect it isn't insured either. Come Jan., the person could just remove the stickers and no one will know whether the vehicle is registered or not.

Seven-digit plates were issued in June 2010. My 6-digit plate is from May 2008.

Haha I got confused by the whole "exchange your plates" verbage. I am still confused by the way

So old plates still need to get sticker renewal if they keep the old plate? Wish the article explained more clearly.

Regarding health care card lamination, pretty sure you are not supposed to do that. Most may not care but the point was that it's suppose to be destructable from what a couple clinics told me.
