So I have 20+ of these foot shaped holes to repair.

Normally I'd cut, install backing - new piece of drywall.

Is there a faster/easier way? Slapping spackle over them is super tempting since most don't actually fully penetrate.

FWIW I had to repair 3 similar ones earlier this year. I just did 2-3 applications of spackle filling mud depending how much got sucked in (waited 12-24 hours for the next layer) and then some sanding + paint, blended in well. I'd say pretty low effort fix that does a decent job

That's kind of what I was thinking with some of the fiberglass mesh stuff.

I guess I'm old doing stuff the way I was taught in the 80s

One of the best things I bought was a cheap $40 oscillating saw for drywall. Cuts it so nice and fast. Gives nice clean cuts too.

Buy a bag of Confill, use that first to fill the hole, then 1 or 2 tight coats of mud and you're golden
