Are you proposing that the government set up and manage this central booking system? If so, L-O-fucking-L.
Hilariously enough, had a bunch of friends book for phase 2B today. AHS's system was a breeze, took 5 mins to get an appt at a clinic for thursday and Friday this week to get a shot haha.

They tried to book thru a closer pharmacy, and it was either appointments a month or so into the future, or no online booking with phone lines jammed.

Kinda funny that AHS's system worked completely flawlessly. Did not expect that.

Same experience here. Checked all the pharmacies near me and no dice. Ended up finding a spot thru AHS for Sunday without any trouble at all. Looks like they actually learned from the last debacle and improved systems big time.

Tried booking though AHS online and the only appointments available are in Red Deer (bit of a drive from Calgary) for the end of April

We watch a colleague book his jab via Teams live. Other than website being updated and some inconsistency before 9am, everything worked and he got an appointment that afternoon.

Sounds like this week, you want a quick jab, AHS is your answer.

Huh. My wife got assigned an April 25th appointment by AHS.

Doubt she was super on it or anything but I don’t think AHS is a slam dunk quick jab. Told her to keep herself on the other wait list as I bet she gets called sooner that way.

Yeah but AHS might actually ask for proof of being a phase 2b candidate. It's probably why they aren't as swamped. Everyone cllskipping the system is going through drug stores.

Proof of a medical condition. Sounds expensive.

My cousin refreshed a bunch and got in for tomorrow. Seems like refreshing for newly open appointments works.

Downtown convention centre can be scaled up to 5000 jabs per day.
Why not setup a spot where needle jabs have historically happened like Olympic Plaza?

Or Boudoir Rouge. Those artistic performers can talk any antivaxer into getting a shot.

Just watching the breakfast show here (UK). This Monday the UK is set to surpass the herd immunity threshold. Seventy Four percent of people will have protection against the virus here.
Technically I can't get the jab here. But that might change.

I was looking over the pond at the covid news in Calgary.. covid variant rates going up, businesses closing again....? I must say...

Lack of vaccine producing infrastructure within the borders.

Anyone that doesn't rely on other countries are doing good.

Plus looks like Canada is in an unique position for a COVID gangbang. You name a variant, we have it.

I'm booked in for the 29th, in Canmore. At least I'll get a day trip to the mountains out of it.

I heard that dental clinics will start vaccinating in May, so I guess there are more doses coming down the line.

For those people booking vaccines, do you get a choice of which one they give you? I'm nowhere near being eligible yet just curious.

Everyone got mRNA ones and AZ are going to Pharmacies only.

I'm not sure what the rule is to determine AZ usage as it is only for 55+ for now.

As for Pfizer vs Moderna, the difference was city vs rural pharmacies. They usually don't have both, Calgary and Edmonton has Pfizer and outside them have Moderna.

But this changes weekly, so who knows.

Contrary to the federal blame game, we do have vaccine production capabilities in Canada. Sanofi owns it, and produces flu vaccines, something like 20% of world supplies iirc. They approached Canada on plans, and we out all our eggs into the backfired China basket. By the time Canada went back to them, they’ve already pivoted Canada site as R&D only for the GSK vaccine so it was too late. If we had acted faster and poured money there, we could have been up and running to produce mRNA (or maybe it was AZ) vaccines by November 2020.

What ended up happening with Sanofi (again by memory) is that by Sept 2020 we signed an agreement to produce GSK vaccine here by late 2021, and last week we invested in expanding their vaccine production facility to be ready in a few years.
