no chance me and my family are getting it. Have couple of doctors in the family and they said stay away from it
Not knocking you at all, but those would be the first docs I have heard of saying NOT to get it. I would be curious to know their reasoning @navdeep

Newfoundland is getting the first shots in Canada... I wonder why a remote island is the first test site?

Pretty sure the first shot was administered in Toronto, and Montreal has received shots.

That explained why Hinshaw's address is moved to noon today and in front of a freezer.

I also heard on the radio today that the federal government has indemnified Pfizer of any legal repercussions related to the Covid vaccine.

To me, that says that Pfizer isn't 100% confident in their vaccine, and the government is pushing it for PR reasons and has set up a "Covid complications fund" or something like that. When I heard that the feds confirmed that this was the case, it is making me think my decision to wait to get the vaccine is correct.

    I'm a no.

I have serious allergies that prevent me from even taking the seasonal flu shot so since this will be basically the same thing I'm out.

Also, for the family, was there any data that they tested it on pregnant/breastfeeding mothers at all? I couldn't see any info on that

No. Current vaccine is not safe for mothers or expecting mothers, kids under 16 or people with allergy should wait.

Expect the exception and not the norm being paraded to fortify anti-vax arguments.

That's said mRNA are not the same as your typical flu vaccine which most are chicken egg based.

Which is totally logical. That's why people expect most of 2021 to turn out any different than 2020 just because vaccine is available is too optimistic.

IMHO, just like you can't bitch about politicians if you didn't vote, you can't bitch about lock downs if you didn't vaccinate.

It's called the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, and it's been around since the 80s. I wouldn't worry about it.

    Fixed that for you.

mRNA technology is actually really fascinating if you wanna learn about it. As soon as the genetic structure of the virus was isolated January 9th and released to the world, one weekend later Moderna had mRNA-1273 designed. It had been designed before the US even had its first confirmed case and it was manufactured and distributed for trials before the US even had its first death.

Obviously testing is always needed but there's a legitimate chance in the future that the technology develops rapidly enough that we could react incredibly quick (and safely) to a similar future pandemic and have a vaccine rolled out in a fraction of the time.
If this had happened only a few years ago, this would have gone from being an epic disaster of a year to us being turbo fucked. Technology has moved rapidly.

However, we didn't start the science of the vaccine from scratch. They had established years ago that the spike protein was a likely target for the vaccine. They pulled a bunch of already existing science off the shelf and applied to a novel technology, but the technology in some ways wasn't the heavy lifting - the science on the virus was. We just didn't know if the mRNA vaccines would work, and now we do. The advantage here is that we can now invest resources into the mRNA vaccine from the outset without worrying about viability.

The big technology leaps to help us in the future will likely involve AI application to protein folding. The first steps are far along on this. Current AI protein folding software can hit something like a 90% accuracy when tested against known proteins. So when we sequence the virus, we can subdivide it into genes, and then look at all of the proteins that the genome spits out like a catalogue and identify good candidates for protein targets. Combine that with mRNA technology moving forward in terms of manufacturing capacity and logistical challenges, we might be able to spit out a viable vaccine from an unknown virus in a few weeks.

    The real question is:

Who would still get the vaccine today, if we could see the effects on the person or the actual discoveries and disclosures, 24 months from now.

If I could get it today, I'd be hopping in my truck to go stand in line right now. Zero hesitation for me. I hope I get a chance in the next six months but I am not optimisitc.

Probably 80% as the undecideds would move to "yes" since they would have more information.
