Default International students are draining food banks

Luckily CBC is on the case, calls it a misunderstanding.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/londo...sits-1.7025016

UofA and UofC both report 70+% of clientele are international students. Not sure what other city based food banks are experiencing but it seems to be consistent and wide spread. Students are coming here legally without the means to support themselves. And others it seems are just taking advantage of us.

I hear Brampton of all places has banned students from using food banks as a result of this.

Is that the end result here? I know we won't see the CBC support that at least.

This is old news at this point but sure is a piss off. International students pay like 3-5x of what in-province students do, and then have the audacity to say poor old me and go to food bank? There was even a video going around of this international student showing how to exploit resources like this.

Should start doing what Norway does and have money frozen in a Canadian account until you move and start studying to show you have the financial means to support yourself while studying and not relying on social services.

Maybe universities post the data somewhere to verify but definitely seems like they're allocating more spots to internationals than before simply because they can charge more.

That's not how it works though. The full tuition cost is the same for both, but Canadian students are subsidized by tax dollars, where-as international students pay the full amount themselves. The only difference between the two is that if a Canadian student drops out mid-semester, the tax-funding stops as it's portioned out to the institution monthly, where-as international students pay in full upfront.

I know, mandatory meal plan for all students, and a big red letter S sewn on their lapel so food banks know not to feed students.

Or just make food banks illegal, probably simpler.

Someone actually has the audacity to drive up to food bank in a GLS. Totally pissed off volunteers who are all driving beaters.

So unless we change how we let people access food book, abuse is expected.

What if they don't want a scarlet letter? Could they switch it up for a big yellow star or something?

The mistake is assuming international students need the food bank, vs ‘hey, free food’.

The government needs to firm a committee so that the selected symbol is inclusive to LgBtQ¥÷€√π÷¥€¢§ and Indigenous groups. Then that will need to be reviewed by The Senate.

A grad program operates exactly as I described at the UofA and it got to the point the Master's program was a joke, and if you took that program industry deliberately throw your resume in the garbage. I mean course-based MSc programs are a joke anyways but that's beside the point. The program was overrun by idiotic international students who didn't have a concept of first year principles and yet somehow eventually graduated with an MSc from Canada which typically holds a lot of weight internationally. Cheating was rampant.

There is more revenue generated per international student than domestic student. University tuition for domestic students, particularly in-province, have some regulation to them while international tuition is completely uncapped. Canada is welcoming an all time high number of international students as verified by the number of study permits issues by the Federal government. If it wasn't for increased revenue realized by the universities, why would they continue accepting more and more international students?

All of this is a tangent to the issue. International students get bent over to study in Canada - a point to which I don't give a shit. But clearly they have money to do so, but resort to using the food bank? Frankly, that should be reserved for Canadian students only because plenty are going to University and need the assistance. Canadian money and donated items support the Food Bank, leave it to Canadians to use it. The Food Bank isn't a foreign aid program.

Indeed post-secondary schools are letting in more international students. They do this because they bring in lots of revenue. Tax dollars are capped which limits enrollment, but int students are only limited by marketing material.

Cherry on top: international students get to apply early.

There's no shame in being shunned at the food bank for driving up in my G-wagon.
The shame is on you for paying full price at the grocery store like a chump.

Seems like an easy solution, mandate international students are required to live in the dorms with the mandatory meal plans included. If they want to come study they should have to fund their living and food up front.

There are videos all over the internet of Indian (the eastern kind) students showing how to game the system. They've been doing it for years. This country is a fucking mess.

Demand for dorms are well past supply. Only first year students are guaranteed dorms.

Seems like an easy solution no? Use some of the spare campus space, build another dorm. Guarantied tenants to pay for it. Seems like a great investment for the universities.
