Someone recently pointed out that smokers may pay more in tax than their cost in health care. I can't find those numbers, and I wouldn't be putting the effort in to confirm them if I did. But at the very least, smoker are literally paying the cost of their unhealthy choices. Drinkers too.

Since the vaccine hesitant and anti-vaxxers are fair game for shaming, if we weren't in 2021, where the majority of social media interactions are heavily influenced by leftist culture - would everyone be just as open and willing to shame the overweight and obese who are literally weighing down hospitals?

Everyone, myself included, has enjoyed harping on anti-vaxxers clogging up our hospitals in this latest wave, but would it paint a different picture for people if we knew that wasn't really the issue and that regardless if someone is vaccinated or not vaccinated the reason why they are in the ICU is because they are simply a fat fuck? Last I checked the US said around 80% of their COVID hospitalizations and deaths were obese and overweight people, so I can't imagine Alberta being much different and I've tried looking for our numbers but I can't seem to find anything.

I feel like if we took all the energy spent shaming the hesitant and anti-vaxxers and put that towards promoting and shaming people into living healthier lifestyles, we could have actually prevented a bunch of hospitalizations and deaths. But we live in a society where someone's diet and the fact that they look like a land whale is off limits.

This came about the other day when I got caught up in a convo with a neighbor who was absolutely going off on anti vaxxers, but I'm looking at him and he smokes a pack of cigarettes and downs at least 6 beers a day and I'm just thinking in my head that even if he is vaccinated this unhealthy slob is going to end up in the ICU anyways.

Except that's not the case at all. Looking at under 60 (because old people have weak immune systems and are going to have more severe effects vaccine or not).

Under 60 in the ICU over the past 120 days you have:
Fully vaccinated - 17 people
Partially vaccinated - 21 people
Unvaccinated - 429 people

And thats not even accounting for the fact that there are 3x as many fully vaccinated people as unvaccinated people. Health conditions or not, poor lifestyle choices or not, the vaccine is the most important thing to prevent people from being hospitalized.

I was hoping the stance that most people have on the unvaccinated not being able to get treatment from hospitals would carry over to the fatties too, but narrowing down the doors is along the same lines so I'll accept it.

I understand all that and I'm not even arguing to not get the vaccine.

I'm saying if we had data to show that the ones who have been bogging down our ICUs during this whole pandemic was 80%+ obese and overweight people, regardless if vaccinated or unvaccinated, would that change people's rage and anger towards them rather than just the unvaccinated. I don't think here in Canada we talk about the obese and overweight issue at all, yet the obese and overweight were prioritized during vaccine rollouts.

That's the thing because Canadians are so uptight about discriminating against fatties, we don't get any data on whether or not the person taking up an ICU bed is obese/overweight or not. But data elsewhere do release that data and have shown that association.

He's paying $2500-$3000 a year in sin taxes for those cigs and beer and will die sooner limiting the amount of acute care that will be needed. He'll have earned that relatively short ICU stay.
