I'd bet that by the end of next week, teachers will be complaining in the news about not being in phase 1
Pretty sure teachers have already been complaining, it just hasn’t made the news yet.

One overlooked group that should be in Phase 1 (or the very first of phase 2), are pharmacists. They're dealing with every sick person out there, including the high risk elderly.

Did we have a chat about how rationing and shortages always lead to this? I feel like we did. I probably said that who gets the shots is a lot less important than making sure they are given out as fast as possible. Probably.

As for teachers, I'm curious why we're hearing about so few infections when there are a lot of people who believe the schools are the key spreaders.

I guess they're protected by that plexiglass and that's bumping them down.

I am very shocked that neither of my kids classes got shut down through the fall. And both are pretty big "regional" schools that house specialized programs and have most of the students bussed in. We all know that anecdotes are the best data, so by my anecdote, schools are responsible for zero cases.

They are not properly representing the complexity of transmission within kids under 18. Schools probably aren't a big source of transmission, but students probably are when they are outside of the classroom. I bet high school student aged kids have been a very significant source of transmission for this disease between social groups.

Leading up to the recent Dec lockdown my sons school was having 2 positive tests a week. This went on for 5 weeks. They obviously do not publish where the transmission came from but the information was released through the schools emailing list. Hard to say 100% it was entirely the school but i also don't believe that it was 100% not due to having kids in school.

Choosing to not release the entire story just creates more guessing about the actual case counts in schools.

I think a rational argument can be made for preferentially vaccinating literally every segment of the population.

That is the political problem with shortages, you are guaranteed going to piss off someone ( likely a lot of people actually).

Appointments getting cancelled because we are running out.
    https://nationalpost.com/news/albert...g-appointments
Alberta is running out of COVID-19 vaccines, with some regions cancelling appointments
    — Alberta has started running out of federally supplied COVID-19 vaccines, with supply completely used up in parts of the province and other regions having to reduce appointments to ration remaining doses for vulnerable populations.

In Calgary, a shortage of available vaccines meant that 1,500 health-care workers had their appointments cancelled this week so that those in long-term care centres and supportive living could receive them instead. And, because of the dwindling supply of Moderna vaccines, 2,000 injections were delayed across the province, said the province’s health authority.

why are the hospitalization rates going up in a vaccinated location? is this because its too early to tell? (or is the vaccine causing hospitalizations)

You need to hit 70% to start seeing effect. The vaccine came too late and the UK variant comes in too early.

And dose 1 is only 52.4% effective. You don't get 90%+ until you get dose 2.

Hospitalizations lag cases by a couple weeks at least. AB's active case count has dropped 40% since Dec 13rd peak yet our ICU still continues to rise. Our hospitalization peak was 10 days ago (21 days after our active case peak)

    Apparently the CMO says otherwise.
"Hinshaw said studies show one dose of the vaccine is about 90 per cent effective, but it’s not clear how long that protection will last without a second dose."

Wouldn’t it be funny if the only reason to have a second dose was to double revenues and profits?

Meh. We have already prepaid for several multiples of the doses our country will need.
