BCE cuts spending after blow from regulator
BCE Inc., Canada’s largest telecommunications company, said it will chop capital spending by $1 billion after a regulator ordered the country’s major phone providers to open up their broadband networks to smaller rivals at prescribed rates.

Been using Teksavvy for over eight years now. Its too bad they have decided to sell itself off and exit the market.

$25 per month cable internet underlines how competition is a good thing, at least price wise for the consumer. There was a time when a satellite data link around 20 mbits was $10,000 per month, then Starlink happened. Competition lives.

I'm generally against Crown Enterprise but at this point, I'd be totally fine with the Gov't taking over responsibility for telecommunication infrastructure given taxpayers end up paying for a lot of it through Government grants and then again through ridiculous bills for shitty service.

Yea, on my 300MBPS fiber optic internet and 2 mobile phones with unlimited data for 39€/month (C$57.50).

I'm not turning into a socialist by any means but Canadian telecom is broken.

Canada is way bigger than Spain. Virtually all maps aren't to scale. Europe is tiny.

People do not realize the cost of setting up such a massive network size wise as is required for Canada and the costs have to be absorbed across a relatively tiny population base comparatively. You cannot compare that same sampling to anywhere else in the world.

Edit - Or maybe it is more fair to say people don't care because everyone here hates corporations and the jobs they provide... Weird

What's even more crazy is how reliable our service is for the footprint that we have. Travelling in the US, I can't even maintain a damn phone call on a 30 minute drive through Manhattan without dropouts. Pages hang loading because of deadspots. Same with India (no skyscrapers affecting coverage) I can drive for 10 mins (in traffic of course) with near useless 0.1mbps of performance. Meanwhile in Calgary, I go to random person's office, on the 40th floor, in the elevator with concrete all around me and my F1TV stream doesn't skip a beat. Saddledome? I'm streaming video from concerts to my kids (to be fair it was terrible when 5G just launched, they took a year to fix it). Maybe Calgary isn't populated enough, Toronto same deal. Just uber fast internet performance with no dropouts while driving. It's crazy how good we have it.

So yea, I rather pay Canadian prices for that level of performance than pay US or even India's 10% of our costs rates. I joke every time we land back in Canada, we're back to first world internet.

Can't make a Spain comparison, it was shit in high traffic areas and unusable at F1 races but that was like 10 years ago. My last real European trip was 5 years ago (Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam) basically same as US. High traffic areas, shitty mobile internet performance.

US cell service sucks, even in the greater LA area. And the second you go somewhere with no people there's no service.

This is overused as an excuse - 75% of Canadians live in population centers of 100k people or more.

The Government (taxpayers) have spent $7.6 Billion since 2015 on Internet Connectivity. https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/hig...speed-internet

It's already socialist... in the Communist Russia sense where the oligopolies get all the benefit.

The Government spent $5500 per resident in Nunavut. It must have helped some Contractors.

As someone who lived rural just an hour outside of Calgary who could not get any service even until Starlink launched and I could receive calls over the internet while at home, I will say the government is appeasing specific voter/ethnic bases to look good while doing nothing for the majority...

I will happily rely on corporate costs long before government control for my service.

Are there edge cases? Sure. Probably cheaper to give all those people money to move somewhere not so close to the arctic circle.
