Alberta buying vehicle from Saskatchewan

Hey everyone!

If you're an Albertan looking to purchase a vehicle in Saskatchewan, do you need any other paperwork other than a bill of sale?

Upon arrival back in Alberta you need a request for Out of province inspection and finally an OOP. Anything else I'm leaving out?

You need the original bill of sale to get an in-transit permit from a registry. Maybe some registries are cool and will take a scanned copy, but the ones I have local to me have insisted on seeing both printer ink and pen ink on the same page. That's not an issue if you don't plan on driving it home. It's a tremendous pain in the dick if you do plan on driving it.

You don't need anything other than a bill of sale. Your insurance will probably take a scan or picture of it, and then you need to get a request for an OOP and then an OOP like you said.

Good news, the registry cannot tell the difference between a bill of sale that you singed on your dashboard, and a legit one. So goverrn yourself accordingly.

I'm not generally shocked at how stupid I am. I feel like I have a pretty good sense for it after 38 years. Other times though, oh boy.

Edit: I don't think my inability to think outside the box has ever cost me, but give enough time and it certainly would have. I don't think in a million years I would have ever thought to "forge" a bill of sale. My first instinct would be to go down to the registry and fight, 100% of the time.

I couldn't in good conscience recommend anyone to forge any kind of legal document. However, if you were considering such a thing, I would ask if you could describe the process that verifies the signature that you were considering forging. then, . . . . .

SGI will give you one that's supposedly good to the border, but according to the registries I've talked to, you need an Alberta permit in Alberta. Maybe if you're going though Lloydminster that would work.

That's the other thing on top of an original bill of sale - you need to have the Alberta permit from a registry.
@dannie would know more about this than I ever will. There's a good chance I'm wrong.

I've done this from bc 3 times and sask once. All on alberta in transits . I was straight up with each seller. Saying I had to make a bill of sale to get the in Transit permits, then filled out proper alberta bill of sales when there for. The actual registration . No hiccups other than being pulled over a few times to check in transit. To be honest I can confidently say at the point of being pulled over I knew more about in transit permits than they did each time.

Regarding getting pulled over. It's worth it to create a photocopy of the sticker and tape it to the back window, as well. Every cop will pull over every car with no plate and it's a hassle you don't need.

You are correct, i might add that I was 30 years old plus doing this so not some punk kid, and didn't try teaching them, just showed I had my ducks in a row.

Also, make s sure you only have one copy of the bill of sale when driving around. I would also bring tape with you as in my case two of the cops pull the in transit sticker off of the car. One was also very concerned that it said put the piece of paper in the front right portion of the window while two of the cars I was driving were Honda beats which are right hand drive and the piece of paper blocks probably 25% of the windshield.

Make sure when you're pulled over you are from point a to point b or getting repairs those are the rules. I drove it a few times just around the neighborhood after I got one of them back, got pulled over, and just said I was on my way to the shop to work on daytime running lights. No problem

Either or. Whichever is easier. Both are valid in each other's jurisdiction. The only caveat being, neither is valid for the US.

True, but having driven through a half dozen US states with a handwritten in transit permit and being pulled over a few times, none of the troopers know the law or care. As long as you have something indicating you haven’t stole it, they’ll give you your speeding ticket and send you on your way. At least that’s my experience.

I find that excessively challenging any time I purchase a new vehicle.
