I was off most of this year. From Jan - July I was on EI because that's what I started on. Then EI ran out and I was on CERB for Aug and Sept. I tried to go on CERB to avoid using up EI but it didn't matter since I was on it before CERB started.
I guess this year ensured all the money I've put into EI I've actually got back instead of the black hole that is government coffers.
There were people getting laid off and receiving both EI and CERB as lump payments back in March/April. The fact those folks tried to just keep it all demonstrates how idiotic they are.

$100k is a lot of money in rural Canada. $100k in any major city is peanuts. You’ll be eating ramen and using public transit just to have enough to pay the mgt for a house you think you deserve to keep up with the Jones’s. People who were making $100k and lost their jobs likely had $3k mgt and $1500 Rover payments. CERB won’t even begin to make a dent in that. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Anyone that makes just over 100k probably got fucked the hardest. Not to mention the pay cuts that occurred during Covid, yet they don't see a penny of the Government's monies.
In the future, they'll also get fucked the most because of the increased tax rate. I'd say most in that income bracket are just regular employees, so tax write offs are near impossible. Talk about getting fucked
I can agree. Get ready for middle class poor. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
For the most part, no. I get tremendous fulfillment from the sweat equity I've put into being where I am today. I grind as well but having money is better than not having it.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I'm also only painting my perspective of his life. The reality is that he also gets to spend time with his 2 adorable kids and he's one of the most genuine people I know. He's never been snobbish about money but damn, I wish someone would pay for half of my mortgage lol.
I think there is something that is just inherently distasteful about welfare despite having foundational wealth to fall back on that others couldn't dream of having.
I saw that article. Even union couldn't fight those shenanigans. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

pretty sure they pay tax eventually, you know, like the GST. end of the day, the gov't gets their cut. they always do.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
also, im pretty sure the cerb money had taxes subtracted off the top already but i could be mistaken. i never got anything anyways so i dont really care either way. the ppl who did just put the money right back into the economy and kept things going.
Tax free CERB.
This is the point CRA is not wanting the tax back.
5% gst is hardly close to anyone's income tax on earnings.
Meanwhile hard working Canadians are getting pumped with increased CPP tax rates.
CERB is taxable income.

Sorry, to clarify, I meant given in full without tax off top but taxable after the fact.
Seriously, please help me out. WtF is your avatar? It looks like an ultrasound of a Kid Icarus fart. I can't tell what's going on there, at all. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Maybe it's because I'm on mobile, but I think it's mostly because it looks like flatulence ultrasound...
The NDP doesn't want anyone to pay it back. I have a feeling the Libs might make a deal since they don't have a majority and need the NDP on some upcoming votes.
Is CERB now CRB (Canada Response Benefit)?
If you applied for EI instead of CERB because the rules were confusing and now your EI runs out, can you now apply for CRB? Or you snooze you lose?
CRB is a different program than CERB, that came in after CERB.
To my understanding it’s more like EI with fewer eligibility requirements.

Gf was laid off a year ago and had done EI previously, she did that again and they flipped her CERB. But a coworker of hers did the same and she got both EI and CERB.. Even the CRA has no idea. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Just hand out the money!!
If you can qualify for EI, you're supposed to go on that and not CRB.
CRB is similar to EI however is in place if you've exhausted all your EI hours or for whatever reason don't qualify and can't find work.
CERB qualifications were if you had a pulse, then you qualify.
Ultracrepidarian
CRB Qualifies self-employed people, EI does not
This is the main difference.
