I started going to bed and watching old tv shows that I've seen 1000 times over (ie The Simpsons) so required no thought. Now, if I wake up at 3am, I throw one of those shows on my tablet and pass out in 5min.
The only downside is that if I watch the Simpsons during the day, I start getting tired, lol.
I do this with old radio shows (Dragnet, Nick Carter, Philip Marlowe, Johnny Dollar, that kind of thing). It helps to have something to shut my head off. Another thing I've done is found onboard camera footage from races, where you just hear the car noise and nothing else. Listening to that will put me to sleep almost immediately too.
And I found the same thing, where if I listen to an episode of Dragnet any time other than at night, I have a hell of a time staying awake.
