Weather like this makes me wonder how fucking dumb were the first European settlers in the area to think "yeah, this is a good spot to set up", let alone the first nations.

I love snow. The more the better. And keep it at a solid -5 to -10 so we don't get all slushy. Nice and clean winter.

FN were nomads, they knew when to move and where most of the time.

Calgary has superb weather compared to edmonchuck or Vancouver. I'd slit my wrists in either of those places.

HAH! I'd rather take Vancouver over Calgary any day. Couple of weeks and grass will be growing and trees blooming. We'll still be shovelling snow.

Yeah, it's warmer, but you are welcome to have it. I dunno, I need my sun. Calgary 2400 hours of sunshine per year. Vancouver, 1900 hours of sunshine.
That's a big difference to me.

I should start a mega thread for this topic. We have the same arguments every year.

Calgary proper isn’t so bad. Seems to be worse to the North of us, South of us, east of us, sometimes west of us. The bad storms are always far worse on the cities fringes too.

Tbh it makes Calgaries location seem pretty ideal. That and, you know, the meeting of 2 rivers might have something to do with it.

Also yes, screw living in Vancouver.

When you're building a town from scratch, there's better places than either of these areas.

Though I could see the appeal a bit after having to travel through Saskatchewan and east Alberta. Then you come up to this place and see some looming mountains ahead. I'd probably say "yeah, good enough" too for the first couple of years, but then I'd keep going after a few of these winters.

Lots of great places to live in the world. Just think Calgary compares well to other Canadian cities that already exist.

Fully agree. Vancouver grey winter rain is just soul-sucking.

Building a fort where two rivers meet was probably a good idea at the time

You're gonna be waiting a loooong time. The NE got devastated, it's going to take years to fix all that up.

Government weather office. I usually average them and the weather network to get a more realistic expectation.

So my daughters going ice skating on sunday for her birthday - I am wondering what the ice condition is going to be like after a week of this type of weather.

You're better off having her wear rollerblades.

This weather will decimate outdoor rinks.
