Holy fack that is a massive 'splosion. I wonder how it compares to the Mexican refinery. RIP to those that undoubtedly lost their lives

Either that, or something popped, caught fire, and they all bailed before it really went up lol

Edit: "Fire at Pertamina's Balongan oil refinery will not impact operations: CEO" wild, i guess only the tank farm took damage.

I’m sure the rest of the refinery will be just fine after being exposed to the surface of the sun for a few hours.

Oil companies never lie. Just like cigarette companies.

well it was 00:30 in the morning, and in the middle of a major thunderstorm.

Last time I worked at an upgrader - we got shut down when the lightning detectors started going off. Dunno if that's how it works in malaysia...

    LoL!
I recall being ordered inside either 3 or 4 times during one night shift at a refinery shutdown. It was ludicrous.
I think they "recalibrated the detection system" after that. They basically lost an entire shift of a shutdown that was only scheduled to be about 4 weeks. Big big dollars.

Whether they truly care about peoples lives or not is up for debate. But killing people on site does cost them a lot of money, so they do take it seriously. You don't want some pipefitter getting struck by lightening up on a structure, that'll delay things a lot more than a day of lightening interuptions.
