I feel ya, although i don't usually get issues until its about -20 unless I'm really exerting myselfThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Appears people in my area use a car starter and warm up for 20+ min as soon as it hits -5
I bet they don't even notice a mpg difference.
Are they not aware we're in a climate emergency??? All that idling is going to compound the amount of emergency we're in!!This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
You know. There are lots of things to do in life that are actually fun right?
Sitting on a couch comes to mind.

I’m sitting at -6000 ft density altitude. Who wants to come drag race me? Only rwd open diffs allowed.

I have a welded diff AWD studded tire car, ain't about that slippery life. Especially when its minus 30 and the roads all glaze over.
Crazy, I just checked Springbank airport and DA’s were -1470ft at 4:00am. If I thought I could hook up with the Trackhawk, I’d go and do some dragy hits! This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Air resistance is a bitch at speed in these temps tho. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Up to -6184 now. 80 mph would probably tear all the trim off my truck. I wonder how far a stock vehicle could go before leaning out? I guess it can’t really compare to 1 or 2 pounds of boost.

Density altitude takes into consideration temperature, and we know cars are faster, due to higher hp, with lower DA’s. Should be a non-issue even for a big Jeep with aerodynamics equivalent to a refrigerator. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
@Darell_n where are you getting your numbers from? I typically use the numbers from flightaware:

I used to use this when I needed DA measurements for race city or castrol

What was wrong with your hot water tank and how did you fix it?
This is what I use. Their app gives you instant readings for your location based off Weather Underground data. (don’t need to select a track). -6531 right now, but also -38°C. A 13.0 second 1/4 mile time gets corrected to 14.2 under standard conditions, obviously not factoring for zero traction. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

The colder denser air is a lot higher in resistance. Not sure how much though. I remember testing my SLK32 back in the day, doing 100-200kmh runs at -40C temps, and it wasn't that much faster than summer. I expected a lot more. And of course watching how much hp it needs to maintain speed on the highway this week in -30C weather, it's like 15% more. So I figure air resistance is much worse as temps plummet. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Was wondering if anyone has done that side of the calculations.

I THINK from reading a few things that most air density calculations for automotive performance are really all about ENGINE performance and engine output, and don't really take increased drag into account. Matters a lot at extra-legal highways speeds.

It 100% doesn't factor in air resistance. There's no way to calculate it properly against all sorts of different cars with different coefficient of drag. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Like I said, my question is, how big of a factor is it? I'm sure the Tesla folks can probably give a better idea as they monitor wh/km religiously, and probably a lot more accurate with less factors involved than with an ICE drivetrain.

On the flipside of that, I believe in Phoenix AZ if it's too hot they cancel flights because takeoff speeds and required runway lengths get too high in the hot thin air.
