Default Just how stupid are politicians?

I'm genuinely baffled by how many politicians decided to travel to international vacation spots this holiday season. I know technically if you follow the correct rules it's allowed but when your job is to "lead" the people be it at the municipal, provincial or federal level would optics not always be a constant factor in your decision making? How did these people think the news was going to go when they are part of the group telling everyone they can't see Grandma at Christmas but yet they hop on a plane to go sit on a beach for a week?

I'm not surprised that people still want to go sit on a beach, but I'm stunned that the politicians didn't think it would negatively affect their careers. I didn't think it was possible but my opinion of government officials is now even lower.

There are always dummies in every single sector of work, so it's not specific to politics.

I don't demand altruistic perfection from politicians. I do hope for at least competent self-interest. Sigh.

Self interest both at the personal and at the "team" level. I would have assumed that the captains of these political teams (party leaders) would have had the brains to go to their people well in advance and remind them that with the restrictions imposed upon the general public they need to lead by example so no sneaking off to the beach. That would raise the question, did the leaders not communicate this to their people or did their people simply disobey the party management?

I think the mistake you are making is that these people are leaders because of competence

Politicians look like jerks if they resign before their term is up. If you do something stupid but not wholly criminal, the politician gets to blame the public pressure as being the cause of dismissal.

Its like if you want to get out of the army, just start wearing socks on your head, cluck like a chicken and dance in circles. Easy out.

Has it ever been any difference, since the first conception of power hit our primate minds? The only reason to be a government leader is to be above the commoner.

I actually don’t understand the anger about going on vacation at all. It’s perfectly allowed within the health regulations.

I think people are more mad that the politicians can afford to go on vacation and they can’t. Nothing new or novel about that.

It's got nothing to do with being able to afford / not afford to go, it's about our "esteemed leaders" preaching that we all need to do our part to flatten the curve, stay home, don't see friends or family, observe the federal government's advisory against non-essential travel. Ya, technically the beach vacations are allowed but the grotesque hypocrisy is what's infuriating. Rules for thee, not for me.

The more I think about it the more pissed off I get, the whole things just further degrades any credibility any government official had ever hoped to carry. Bunch of fuckin' clowns.

That’s the point. The rules for them ARE the same as for everyone else.

Everyone else is allowed to go to Hawaii for Christmas if they want to, but if you are a politician you can’t?

I think we all know who the real hypocrites are.

It was always an untenable situation when certain actions were "strongly discouraged" but not really restricted.

There are daily flights to sun destinations, and there have been basically all of 2020. Of course people are on those planes.

I think my revelation for the 2020 is I’m not even mad at politicians anymore. It’s the general public I have beef with.

Politicians are just a symptom of the disease.

It’s not a matter of rules for thee but not for me though.

The rules are the same for everyone and no rule was broken here. People can choose whether they want to go on vacation or not, same as they could before Christmas

Apart from the hypocrisy, which is endemic in politics, he should resign simply because he lacks the wisdom to know better than to post about vacation on social media.

I am not mad that they can afford it, and I can't. What I am pissed about is they can't follow the same rules they set out for us common folk.

That screencap is taken right from their own website about the travel restrictions, and yet, they are mightier than us, so fuck it, they can go.

    https://www.alberta.ca/covid-19-travel-advice.aspx

So yeah, I am pissed about it. After being preached at by them for the last 9 months to flatten the curve, and not put everyone at risk. Stay home, stay safe, save a life bullshit, but it's for you, not me, because government.
