So I ended up with a handful of staff that left the country over Christmas/New Years - UK, Hawaii, Mexico among the spots flown to even though we strongly suggested they don't and made them quarantine for two weeks after (many without pay) even if they flew through Calgary with the quick test option.

Anyway, based on all the comments from the NDP and their supporters, I should be allowed to fire those staff no problem, right?

Don't get me wrong, I agree that the politicians who traveled had horrible judgement and should have known better, but it isn't a law stating they can't go. You should be expected by the public to lose your job over this.

You are the boss, it's your prerogative.

Politicians works for us, so it's our choice.

That's said, as long as you have laid out that they will not get paid on quarantine when they are back and they acknowledge, there is no problem here. They are not under public scrutiny.

There was some sarcasm there as can you imagine if I fired a receptionist who traveled out of the country for Christmas? The company would be labeled as an evil company that only cares about profit and not its people, etc, etc, etc. I would personally never do that even though I didn't agree with them going. And I agree politicians work for us, but firing for a bad judgement is a bit much no? Don't vote for them next time.

So far, I think nobody was fired, just demotions. 1 MLA got removed from UCP that everyone agree is an asshole riding on a anti-NDP ticket anyway. In a way, just like you won't fire someone because of public wrath, Kenney did it BECAUSE OF public wrath.

PR is a very strong influence factor.

And in a position of power, be careful of being caught as a hypocrite. Asking people to do something that yourself won't do.

I am not disagreeing with you at all. My initial comment was really about all the NDP supporters on twitter that I saw saying these guys should be fired. I just find it funny that people that support a party that is usually for workers rights and not the rights of the employer that they are so ready to switch sides when it is convenient.

Meh. Turn that shit off. It's all noise regardless of left or right. How can you fire someone doing something that isn't illegal? There too many people has not been responsible for anything in their life and thinking the world working in black and white like Disney movies.

It's just all entitle people with little to no empathy. If you don't like who you voted in, just be glad that you have way to correct that every few years.

I guarantee the city has spent 10x (20x?) the amount of his questionable expenses carrying out the audit.

That being said, it's not about the money, this guy simply seems like a moron.

At some point, you'd think he'd cut back on the fraud. Just out of self interest.

Fat fuck Joe Magliocca strikes again.

This guy is such a piece of shit. People who use their energy complaining about a police dog being kicked should be more pissed over this.

I'm sure that he knows he will likely not get back into office so he probably doesn't care.

Wearing a mask insinuates he's robbing us.

Actually, it would be more like if you told them not to travel, so they don't, and then you go off to Hawaii, Mexico, wherever, for a holiday. Your employees aren't the ones (or part of the group) that sets policy. You are. They would be fairly justified to be pissed at you, wouldn't you think?

On another note, it looks like the UCP aren't the only ones to exercise pretty poor judgement:
