For those of you with kids, what would have made the child-rearing experience better?

Money to buy the support that you need? More family/in-law support?

Both. Basically any type of help. Irritates me when wife watches her reality shows and they never show the multiple nannies and helpers. Although I do have very mixed feelings about essentially paying someone from a 3rd world country speaking broken English raising your children.

Family support. We have virtually none, and it was very difficult compared to friends who have their parents, in-laws, grandparents, etc etc. to lean on.

Now those come with their own set of problems, but if we had that kind of support, we likely would have had a second kid.

I lived around family with kids, received very minimal support. I guess aside from having them younger the ability to have a nanny would be nice.

If were to debate between the two, I think I would pick being younger number 1. There is a threshold I find you get used to a lifestyle and when you get there you don't want to give it up, so you stretch more and work more as a couple which then makes it worse I think.

No regrets with kids at all for us. We had them younger and that was perfect IMHO. My wife just turned 40 and I was 47 and no more kids in the home! While we love out kids dearly, having our house back to exactly the way we want it and being able to do whatever the fuck we want whenever we want without pants on is pretty sweet!

Now if someone is not sure they want kids but have them anyways, they are fucking idiots. There are far too many losers in the world to contribute more of them as a disinterested and ineffective parent. The job is far too important to take on only to flush it down the toilet.

I think some people just hate their careers more than others.

I don’t pretend to like every aspect of my job, but there are lots of pets of it you wouldn’t need to pay me for me to do it.

I made the mistake of starting my unprofitable passion project at a time in my life when I really needed the money. That could have been a really fun way to break even for a few years, but it was stressful as fuck looking at the bank account.

Current role is about 10% enjoyable, and 90% stress, but having a double income household again is worth a lot in terms of peace of mind. My total life stress is down.

I don't intend to "stop working" really ever
I do intend to have enough financial security that my paycheques can be used for discretionary spending and not necessities.

I would say if you have a time/money obligation to another person, it's not a hobby. However, if you're building bird houses on occasion and selling them, that's a hobby. Even playing the markets would be a money making hobby, but since you have no obligation to trade, it's not a job and therefore you are retired.

My Grandpa for example retired and became a part time course marshal at a golf course, Worked 8hrs/ week, golfed for free 7days/week.

That's my plan, drop the kid off at school and work part-time at a golf course. Retired for me = done with primary career.

Unlike IG, being a parent is not always awesome but yeah theres definitely no regrets from me. You gotta be pretty messed up to openly admit you regret having kids lol
