If I ever get baller enough for a vacation property, I'm getting one without cellphone service or televisions. Probably will have a fireplace though.
Before we had kids my wife organized a weekend at a cabin at Napika Mountain resort. No cell service, no TV, I don't even think there was a radio in the cabin. But you had a pile of cards and board games and an amazing wood burning stove. They even had a wood fired hot tub! It was easily one of the best vacations we've ever had.

Currently I have an older gas fireplace in my office, and a wood burning fireplace (with gas start assist) in the living room. We use the wood burning fireplace a few times a week, and when we have guests. We have zero TVs in the house.

This is what we have going on. Ignore the Christmas clutter.

Our original house plan called for a flush fireplace, but I actually got them to pull it in a bit so I had a visual anchor, and a natural support for the shelves I built. Then I covered it in travertine. Works well for the look we wanted. I wanted the TV mounted, wife wanted it on the shelf. She won, of course - but I wasn't happy. In the end it doesn't matter as we rarely use the TV in this room.

My wife and son like the fireplace. Its a "thing" for my kid to eat ice cream in front of the fire, and my wife often has it on if she's in the living room working from home, as it does put out some heat. We find it nice if we have company. Still, burning off gas for visuals does seem silly...

that's my thoughts as well, I haven't looked in to it, but this cant be nearly as efficient as your furnace.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

It's not remotely as efficient as the furnace for heating the house... depending on the room size though, it could be an effective solution for just warming up where you are instead of raising the temp in the whole house

Regardless, if you actually look up how much gas they use, fireplaces are very inexpensive to operate. Cheap enough that efficiency doesn't really matter IMO.

With a fan, a gas fireplace is somewhere around 85% efficient vs 95% on a modern gas furnace. Mainly used for specific zone heating, which a furnace can’t do, just to create a warmer area in a part of the room. My living room is very open and fairly large, so it makes sense for us. If I had a smaller living room where the warmer area affects say my area where we watch tv, I would probably use it less. This year we’ve been using it to dry up gear after skating or sledding.

Gas is cheap so efficiency isn’t a huge deal.

I prefer these malm fireplaces and similar ones. Easy to tuck in a corner and fire a chimney through the roof.

For single room heating, gas fireplace is pretty good efficient and cheaper than any electric appliance. . Wearing a sweater is more efficient but......

Looks sweet but likely not a practical option for many.
