Do you like big fireplaces / do they add home value for you?

Curious what others think. Looking at properties and so many places have big Fireplace mantels as the feature of a room but make TV/couch placement rather awkward. In some cases you have a theater room downstairs but it tends to make the main floor living room just a conversational area and not something you'd use day to day to watch netflix. In some cases I'd rather just scrap the fireplace and make a nice feature wall with a centered TV and some built in storage/aesthetics instead but most things seem to say Fireplaces add value to a home.

Smaller ones like these I don't mind as much since you could still use the space above it.

In most modern homes, they are totally out of place, unless you have a living room, and family room on the same floor.

We have a fireplace with a mantle (with a back set opening) and a TV on the mantle because theres no where else it would go in the room. And we have never used our fireplace until this year, but we are finding it quite nice and warms up our main floor pretty nicely.

I opted to delete the fireplace when I built my house, don't think that I'd get the value out of it when I go to sell the house. Mind you I'm just in a starter home, if it were something in the $450k+ range I'd expect to see a fireplace.

Agreed. Funny when shopping for a home 2 years ago i'd say 95% of the houses had a TV over the fireplace.. we canned that quick and moved our TV upstairs. Nothing i hate more then having a TV on when prepping supper or in a living room.. TV shouldnt be the main feature of your house in my mind

Wood burning fireplace is a huge selling point for me. I love mine. Gas burning is kindof a waste of space I’ll admit. Maybe a wall fireplace in the bedroom or a 2 way between bedroom and master bath could be a fun feature.

That said I have had 3 tv’s over fireplaces and it never bothered me. Currently have my frame over my wood burning fireplace and I like it.



Fireplace is very deep, mantle and wall doesn’t get warm so I’m unconcerned about the tv. My HT in the basement is for more serious watching, the frame is good for casual shit and/or the wife.

I've been told it's a white people thing to act like they don't watch TV, so instead they have sitting rooms with big fireplaces like the first pic and put the TVs upstairs and downstairs. If you have other dedicated areas for a TV, that seems to make sense.

Personally, I like to have the TV on for background noise when I'm cooking/cleaning up, so I have a TV over my "big" fireplace (open space opposite kitchen - should've gone with a Frame here), one in the loft, one in the basement, and will get another for the living room on the main floor.

We have a mid size electric fireplace in the living room that we absolutely love. Makes the room feel cozy and actually heats up the room pretty quick. We also have a TV directly above it, but it is fully recessed and we would run Google Photos on it so it's showing arts most of the time. Pretty happy with the setup.

when we built our previous house, we told them to remove the fireplace since we knew we would never use it.

our current house that is 30 years old, there's a fireplace in the center of the house that I'm looking forward to use once we go below -20C again. not excited about cleaning it though.

I've got a fireplace now and I'll never have another one if I have a choice. I almost never use it, and it really handcuffs you into how you want to set the room up.

Having said that, my furnace shit the bed a couple winters ago so the fireplace was the only heat source overnight. So it was handy then.

White person here. Yup, can confirm. We have a fireplace on the main floor and kept our TV upstairs in the bonus room. I like not having the tv in front of me all the time/being the focal point of the room when Im cooking, cleaning up or just interacting with my family during meals/hanging out.

White person here. Yup, can confirm. We have a fireplace on the main floor and kept our TV upstairs in the bonus room. I like not having the tv in front of me all the time/being the focal point of the room when Im cooking, cleaning up or just interacting with my family during meals/hanging out.
