Do you like big fireplaces / do they add home value for you?

This poll is not really worded the best way.. I think the intent is to talk about big mantles/chimney/rock work on the wall, not the fireplace itself... right?

For me, it's yes to big fireplace, but no to rocks/bricks that go from floor to ceiling. Oversized fireplace with normal mantle (contemporary flush mount with no mantle is ideal) for me. We have a wood burning in one living room with normal brick surround and mantle overtop.. it's nice to look at, but never been used since that's the living room that's for show (waste of space, but that's another story). Our gas fireplace in the other living room that shares a space with the kitchen gets used at least once a week during the winter.

My wood burner has a gas line in it. Never had the balls to try it as it looks like it hasn’t had use for a couple decades ( found a few lego car tires shoved in the key hole and no key was left with the house either). Seems like a good option for getting stubborn logs ripping?

That line is called a "fire starter", key turns gas on, use bbq lighter, logs burning turn key off.

We had one in our house growing up, they work pretty well.

Yeah the small gas line is good for warming up the chimney flue as well to get it drawing as well. Nice feature.

We never used the fireplace at our old house but that was due to the kids being younger and we had a lil tikes play house in front of it lol When we got the new place we both wanted a nice fireplace. I originally planned on removing the old one to replace with a new longer linear one but its a double sided fireplace and the cost on that was too much for us so we had to do what we could with the old one. A lot of our friends said to do away with the TV but i got adhd or whatever you call it so i always need the tv on for back ground noise. When the room was bare i was really regretting not going the bigger fireplace but once we got moved in i feel the small one fits the wall pretty good, the tv is on one of those swivel mounts so when in the kitchen i can swing it out.

Nope... we're almost there.

Gas or wood-burning?

I'd only had gas fireplaces since moving away from home, and rarely used any of them... I think one time for any of the fireplaces in the master/bath and only a handful for any of the living area fireplaces. Now that we have wood-burning fireplaces, since the weathers turned cooler, I've been using them several times a week. Even made a point to check the bylaws to insure new builds can still have wood-burning fireplaces (they can).

I've had both. Fireplaces with TV over it and without and if I can help it, I'd go with a linear fireplace, floor to ceiling rock work with a TV.

I liked not having a TV on the main floor too, but thats what I'd prefer. My last house had a huge fireplace. Excuse the old flintstone Samsung lol for reference, thats a 60" TV

Agreed. If I have the TV on, its for Bluetooth so I know what music is playing

When I had a fireplace I used to use it maybe twice a month. But it's not notably absent in my life now that I don't have one. On top of that, I'm personally not a fan of putting a TV over the fireplace. I think it's too high.

I find it interesting that people don't want a Tv on the main floor, for me, that's the only place to put a TV, Tv's shouldn't be in bedrooms, and the second floor should be a private space where guests are not permitted, therefore a TV on the main floor is the only option, bonus rooms are complete nonsense and a waste of space IMO, that should be an additional bedroom/office.
