Thumbs down Anyone had luck moving a utility box?

I have an Enmax box and shaw termination hub on my driveway. We have 2 cars and can snake around it, it wouldn’t be that bad if the driveway didn’t have a massive ground discrepancy around each unit. As I weight future options on garage Reno’s, lifts, etc. Part of me wonders if it is even possible to get these thing a moved. We are a stretch of 7 houses with a bit of dead space at one end and a park at the other that are city property, which made me wonder if anyone has had experience with this.

I have nothing helpful to add for your question, but that would be a big boon for your property if it can be moved. I would expect you would probably be on the hook for the costs if they would be willing to move it though.

Zero percent chance that ever happens. You might technically own that land but ENMAX has an easement allowing their use of it. Where would they possibly move that?

Serious answer? Move- that will be the most cost effective option.

I used to work as a Land Surveyor for Enmax, placing these and their pull boxes all over the city - yes, you can definitely try for a move if you want, but EVEN IF APPROVED, it would be at enormous cost to you - im going to guess 50,000$ assuming no neighbour wants in.

Its also dependent on the future location, as there will have to be coring done as well as other utilities that can get in the way. You would also be footing the bill for any future easement, blah blah.

In short, yes to moving homes!

    But try if you want:

Good to know, curious if I can fill in some of the dip with cement to make a more friendly garage approach

knowing a bit about your situation, would maybe excavating the floor of your garage down closer to street grade be a better option? Would ease the crazy incline into your garage and maybe ease some of the issue? I am just spitballing here, I don't know how possible such a feat would be. might be just as expensive, but less of a hassle?

At least that pad was placed high enough. You certainly can concrete up to the bottom level - however the pad might need bollards for protection as per guidelines in that case. That Shaw pedestal looks pretty haggered already.

you almost certainty DO NOT own the land. I'm betting your property line is halfway up the driveway. Check your RPR.

I suppose anything is possible with enough money. 50,000 wouldn't even cover the cost of the paperwork/permits/land transfers/ROW... ECT. It will be lots of moolah.

This might be a great idea. Higher ceiling height in the car hole and a better approach angle. People do this in basements sometimes. Could be a reasonable compromise for you.

So that tree that is directly infront and behind the enmax box might get requested to be removed at some point, thats all I imagine could happen here. I had similar trees surrounding my enmax box on my driveway and they sent me a polite letter saying "remove the trees or face legal action" as it was apparently obstructing their ability to work on the box. They had never come to work on the box since I removed the offending greenery. The only thing I have noticed in the older parts of my neighbourhood is that they ripped up everyones front, side yards and driveways to install fiber. Is the shaw cable box still in the same condition as pictured?

and I did not have the only say in the matter (most people just want it done ASAP and don't care about quality).

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

It would likely be cheaper to swap the walkway and garage. Meaning, move your garage to the east and redo the walkway on the west side of the garage within your property. At the same time, you could excavate to lower the floor to get a higher ceiling in the garage / build higher.

lol wow :o Seems odd they wouldn't have opted for a side-exit garage. Maybe there's a utility ROW preventing that though.

Thats a creative thought, but I suspect you wouldn't be able to shift the garage the full distance east due to setback requirements. Maybe a zero lot line would be possible?

50k might just go to the lawyers - this is no mere small move - the pad really needs to go into the green space at either end of the lane. Could be 6 months before any work is even started onsite.

Also, there appears to be a regular distribution line on the other side of the alley (with aerial lines running into homes) - a bit of a strange setup for sure to have both UG and above ground utils setup like that in close proximity.

    Negative.
Box looks like shit for eternity. Never even gets fixed, let alone moved.
