The city will have the ability to ticket companies directly for improperly parked scooters. Calgarians will also be allowed to ride on quieter streets without road markings rather than just sidewalks and bike lanes.

Scooters will also be allowed in Calgary year-round, rather than being taken away after the first snowfall of the year.

I like the fact that they can be ridden on quieter streets but year round? Some fool is going to try riding one in the winter and hit some ice then crack a skull open.

Lol, bike paths and bike lanes are cleared before everything else. So, unless we have snowmageddon - probably just fine 3/4 of the year...

Been trying to chase down some snow tires for mine, might just have to sipe up a set of off-roads.

I swear I heard there were a bunch of fee changes now.
If that's true, I see this turning into a car2go trajectory.

My personal scoot is just waiting for the weather to turn. Have to change up the paint or something because it looks too much like a Bird from a distance.

you're better off leaving it looking like a rental, it's still technically not allowed to ride personal scooters anywhere except dedicated bike paths in parks.

Meh, it'll be ok. The fine for riding on the road is $25 on the rental so I can imagine if they want to call on it, it shouldn't be higher than that. Saw a guy riding an electric bicycle just yesterday. Roads are clearish in a lot of places.

Same image i just posted, electric bikes are fine, personal e-scooters are not, it's bullshit dinosaur politics and "probably" wont be enforced unless you're being a douche, but that's the official bylaws.

Yeah, it a messed up system for sure. They seem to like to classify legal for an electric scooter as 250 watts and/or 15.5 mph in most of the world. Go over 500 watts and they might start considering it a motorcycle.

Personally I think they should just draw the line at one horsepower (750 watts) which is definitely enough to get to 50 km/h. Anything above that requires licenses and for use as a motor vehicle.

That being said 1/2 horsepower is a very nice place to be for transporting 200 pound riders @ 30 km/h.

What does 700 watts look like?

50k on a scooter would be scary as shit, i think mine does like 20 and that's plenty.. that's also pathway speed limit... Should be more than enough.. already too many spandex warriors on the pathways cruising at 50 around blind corners on their road bikes.

pretty sure zenops is way into the hole of obfuscating scooter vs scooter.

ebike/vespa seated style scooters vs stand up / kick scooters are radically different things.

Not sure how the "year round" part is going to work. My neighbor is a lime juicer, and once the scooters get below 10 degrees they stop recharging (they are supposed to be good down to 4 degrees, but his experience proves otherwise). Even with his heated garage, he's had some that didn't warm up enough to charge overnight to be back out to meet the deadline. The juicers are already on a thin margin, and my neighbor stops doing it once it goes from a 7 hour turnaround to 24+ hours and nursing them along.
Bird and Roll don't outsource their charging, but I assume they face the same problems with lithium batter cold temperature problems.

I wonder if the scooters would still be profitable if they started breathalyzing the nighttime riders....

They can make a Lithium Iron Phosphate version for Canada. They discharge all the way down to -30 celsius, but of course still recommended to charge when above zero.

I wouldn't use an electric scooter below 5 celsius on a standard lithium ion either, the risk of battery damage is definitely there. Although I have heard of people using at -5 celsius and then waiting hours indoors before even trying to charge.

Yes they are. But if we are talking commuting scooters used in the last two years as trial, they are definitely more of the 40 pound variety standing kickscooter. There are all sorts of "in between" devices of almost-bicycle as well.

    https://www.amazon.ca/Razor-EcoSmart...262034&sr=8-14

Half a horsepower for this type of device, is perfectly adequate to get to playground zone speeds. How did combustion cars ever get to 200 horsepower to move one human? Not entirely sure what happened there. Worth mentioning too, that about four hours of full sunlight on a 100 watt solar panel (which might last 20 years nowadays) pretty much gives 10 miles. Free scoots for 20 years on one solar panel. Electricity is much more efficient at converting energy to movement (at least 3x) than combustion per HP.

I figure under Biden, might as well go full hippie. Oil, Yup... Done like dinner?

There's a 2 minute hairdryer solution to this problem. Warm them significantly before you charge them, get the circuit board with the temp sensor warmed up so it allows power to flow, then the charge will create enough heat in itself - just don't melt stuff.

Even if that did work, 30 scooters per batch means an extra hour of labor for the same pay. My neighbor switches over to skip the dishes if the hassle of scooters is too high or the pay or number of scooters is too low (the pay per scooter is variable and based on demand). If a scooter throws an error code it has to go back to the warehouse, which pays peanuts and is an efficiency killer.

Dear CRA, I had to add the dry sauna to my house to quickly heat up lime scooters so they could be charged quickly. I believe this should be an allowable expense.

Are we going to be allowed privately owned scooters if this is the case?
