What's beyond's opinion on basement window security bars these days?

Pointless IMO. So many easier ways into the house, a burglar will just pick one of those instead. Just make sure you have good insurance and other deterrents such as lights/cameras/dog that might make them pick a different house. If you bar you windows, they'll just break another window or kick in a door or go in through the garage.

I always laugh when I see people go all fort knox on their front door, and then there is a window right beside it Not saying this is you, just a general observation. I get the need to do extra things to feel secure, and I used to be like that too, but it's just completely pointless unless you can apply the same level of security to every single entry point which just isn't reasonable.

Previous owners left some ADT security bar thing on the basement windows. I'm sure the ADT sticker does more. We installed a film on the basement windows to give the "frosted" look. Helps keep the natural light coming in and now ensures nobody can see in or out
As said above, keeps the honest honest.

Probably just as effective to put a lock on your gate if you're worried.

Two categories of break-ins :
1. random, crime of opportunity - people randomly opening doors, see something valuable
2. targeted - they know something of high value is inside

Lock your doors, close windows, park cars in garage, keep valuables out of sight from windows to prevent #1.
Nothing you can do to prevent #2 if they want in.

Maybe I live a sheltered life, but I don't see people breaking into homes through basement windows randomly.

Dogs are the best deterrent! Good luck to any idiot who tries to come in our house when we are not home. Even friends who he knows well are not getting through the door when we aren't there.

No. A perp could just as easily break a main floor window or door. Heck my patio door is mostly glass
